Four MJT-PGA of Alberta Junior Champions crowned after 54 hole championship

Calgary, AB – (August 10, 2012) – The Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) PGA of Alberta Junior Championship welcomed nearly 80 players to the 54-hole Golf Canada-ranked tournament (on CN Future Links National Order of Merit) at McKenzie Meadows Golf Club in Calgary, AB, on August 7th, 8th and 9th. Near perfect weather and scoring conditions were enjoyed by the field which saw four division champions crowned, with Calgary’s Brayden Brown also receiving valuable American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Performance Stars as well as an exemption into the prestigious Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour’s (RMJGT) Tour Championship at McCormick Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ, USA, this December.

Brown, 17, won the MJT-PGA of Alberta Junior Boys 17-19 title and Low Overall Honours on the very difficult McKenzie Meadows golf course, after firing great rounds of 70-70-72. “I made a lot of clutch putts for par down the stretch,” he said. “Evan (Holmes) had a putt to tie on the last hole, and barely missed or we would have gone into a playoff.” Runner-up in this division with three fine rounds of 74-68-71 was Evan Holmes, 17, of Calgary, followed by Geoff Fry, 17, also of Calgary, who closed with a three-under-par 69 to place third (70-75-69).

Breanna Carrels, 16, of Lethbridge, AB, shot 82-82-77 to take the MJT-PGA of Alberta Junior Girls Champion title over runner-up Erin Farner, 17, of Calgary, (83-84-80). “It feels great to win, all my hard work is paying off!” said Carrels. “It was nice to break 80 in the final round and post a solid score.” Finishing in third place in the Girls division with scores of 83-81-88 was Shannon Raina, 19, of Calgary.

MJT-PGA of Alberta Junior Boys 14-16 Champion was Scott McNichol, 16, of Calgary, (71-70-75), who beat 16-year-old Matt Codd of Red Deer, AB, (71-75-72) in a very tight race. McNichol, who was just trying to stay with the game plan he used for the first two days, said after the final round, “The winds were very difficult today, tricky. The winds were up a little, and it made everything seem difficult.” Finishing in a tie for third place in the division was first-round leader Marcus Brown, 16, of Surrey, BC, (69-73-79) and Mack Pretty, 16, of Priddis, AB, who shot 72-72-77.

13-year-old Eric Chantler of Fort McMurray, AB, was crowned MJT-PGA of Alberta Junior Boys 13 and Under Champion after firing rounds of 76-75-79 to dominate the field. “It feels good to win, it is my fist win on the MJT so I am very excited,” he said. “My key this week was putting, I putted well for three days.” Finishing in second place was Michael Valk, 13, of Medicine Hat, AB, who carded 85-82-79, while Liam Wallace, 12, of Calgary, shot 90-80-85 to place third in the division.

The Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition in each division was won by Michael Valk, Matt Codd of Red Deer, Caleb Langford of Calgary, and Erin Farner, while the Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition divisional winners were Liam Wallace of Calgary, Matt Codd of Red Deer, Brayden Brown, and Shelby Unger of Calgary. Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Brayden Provost of Brocket, Christopher Murray of Priddis, Evan Cheng of Calgary, and Shannon Raina.
