Termuende qualifies for Florida at MJT’s 1st Choice Savings One Day stop at Land-O-Lakes

Coaldale, A.B. – (April 16, 2012) – With cool temperatures for most of the day, winds whipping up and snow in the forecast, Joel Termuende, 17, of Cranbrook, BC, played very solid golf on April 14 at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s 1st Choice Savings One Day Season Opener in Alberta at Land-O-Lakes Golf Club in Coaldale. Termuende had to battle strong winds and difficult conditions to carve out a 75 (+4), winning the Boys 17-19 Division after fending off local Ryan O’Donnell, 19, of Lethbridge, AB, by three shots (78). Scott Merriam, 17, of Cranbrook, BC. finished in third position on the division after carding a round of 82.

“It’s a good feeling (to win), it’s my first win on the MJT since I was 13 years old,” said Termuende whose home course in Cranbrook is closed and still covered with snow. Termuende cited getting the ball up and down in the wind, along with patience, as the key to his victory and his win as his tournament highlight. He receives an exemption into the FCWT National Championship in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida this May.

12-year-old stand out Brendan Brown of Calgary, AB, dominated the Boys 13 & Under with an even Par 71 under very difficult conditions. “It feels great to continue to play well and know that my game has not slipped back and is still pretty solid. I have worked hard this winter, and will keep working hard over the year and hopefully I keep winning,” said Brown of his goals for the season. Finishing runner-up was Michael Valk, 12, of Medicine Hat, AB, who carded an 84 with some great play, followed up by MJT newcomer Kai Iguchi, 11, of Banff, AB, who shot 87.

Patrick Murphy, 15, of Crossfield, AB, won the Boys 14-16 Division via retrogression over Matthew Ritchot, 15, of Lethbridge, as both players shot identical scores of 79. “Patience and sticking to my game plan,” he summed up, “and making par on 18 to keep tied with Matt (Ritchot) was a highlight.” Finishing in third place was Andrew Chelak, 15, of Calgary.

In the Girls Division, Brianna Carrels, 16, of Lethbridge won her first outing on the MJT, firing an 84 and finishing three strokes ahead of nearest rivals Bria Jansen, 14, of Cochrane, AB, and Gina Kowalchuk, 16, of Lethbridge. “I am very surprised and extremely excited for this win today,” stated Carrels. “I was very happy that I was not being too analytical and just kept plugging along.”

Mr. Lube Long Drive Awards went to Bradley McKeating of Calgary, Cory Audette of Swift Current, SK, Daniel Ludwick of Calgary, and Bria Jansen. Sundog Skills Awards were taken home by Ethan Choi of Pincher Creek, AB, Doug Whitten of Medicine Hat, Shelby Unger of Calgary and Joel Douglas of High River, AB.

The Alberta schedule continues in Lethbridge, Alberta with the MJT 1st Choice Savings Series at Paradise Canyon Golf Resort on April 28-29, 2012. This event is Golf Alberta Order of Merit ranked and will have many top players competing for these valuable points. For more information please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
