Four shortlisted for Callaway Junior World Championship at MJT’s Morgan Creek Stop

Surrey, B.C. – (April 9, 2012) – A hole-in-one from Jared du Toit of Kimberley, BC, helped him to finish one shot ahead to win the Boys 14-16 division and overall tournament medalist title with scores of 71-72 over the Easter weekend at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s event at Morgan Creek Golf Course in Surrey, which was attended by players from far and wide and was a qualifier for various age groups in the Callaway Junior World Golf Championship.

“It’s a good feeling (to win), especially after the not so good start,” said du Toit, 16, whose home course in Kimberley is still covered with snow. Du Toit cited his ace on the 16th hole on day two as the key to his victory and tournament highlight. He is now shortlisted for a Boys 15-17 spot in the Callaway Junior World Championship in San Diego this July, pending the outcome of other MJT qualifiers across the country.

Runner-up behind du Toit in the Boys 14-16 division was Chris Crisologo, 16, of Richmond, BC, who fired back-to-back rounds of 72 for a 144 total, just one shot behind the winner. Third place went to Colton Dorion, 16, of Surrey, BC, who carded 74-76 (150). Fourth place was claimed by James Kim, 14, of Langley, BC, who shot 75-76 and is the eligible age to be shortlisted for a Boys 13-14 spot in the Callaway Junior World Championship.

12-year-old Alisha Lau of Richmond, BC, shot great scores of 74 and 73 to win the Girls division title by five strokes – outstanding achievement after starting out in MJT Mini Tour events only last year. “It feels kind of shocking to me because coming in to the tournament I wasn’t really sure how I was going to play and I was kind of not sure how I would stack up against the older girls. The highlight for me was having fun and playing well.” Lau is now shortlisted for the Callaway Junior World Championships, together with runner-up in the Girls division, Madison Kapchinsky, 17, of Kelowna, BC, who shot 78-74 (152) to place second. Winnie Hyun, 17, of Langley, BC, scored 79-74 (153) to place third.

Aaron Crawford, 17, of Calgary, Alberta, made the trip to the tournament in BC worth his while and won the Boys 17-19 division by five shots after firing rounds of 75 and 71 (146). “My irons were going very well,” he summed up, “and birdying 18 on the second day was a highlight.” Runner-up Brayden Brown, 17, also of Calgary, shot 75-76 while third place went to Darren Day, 17, of Victoria, BC (75-77=152).

In the Boys 13 & Under division, first and third were only separated by two shots, with Perry Xin, 12, of Vancouver, BC, carding 74 and 77 (151) for the win. “On the second hole I chunked my second shot in the water. I did not give up and I was awarded a par,” stated Xin. “I feel proud of my success and want to win again.” Second place went to Jae Wook Lee, 12, of Langley, BC, who shot 81-72 for a total of 153. Roy Kang, 13, of North Vancouver, BC was one shot back with consistent rounds of 78 and 76 for a 154 total.

Mr. Lube Long Drive Awards went to Jhoyner Labrador of Fort McMurray, AB; Alexander Kwok of Richmond, BC, Roy Kang and Keanna Mason of Maple Ridge, BC. Sundog Skills Awards were taken home by Tyler Roope of Langley, BC, Oscar Baek of La Habra, USA, Mathew McConnachie of Surrey, and Ella Williams of Calgary. The Golf Town Comeback Award recipients were Robert McManus of Surrey; Jacob Bland of Sechelt, BC; Brendan Lancaster and Ashley Omidi, both of Surrey.

The British Columbia schedule continues at Swan-e-set Bay Resort in Pitt Meadows with the MJT Lindsay Kenney Classic on May 5 and 6, while the next tour stop in Alberta is the MJT 1st Choice Savings One Day Season Opener at Land-O-Lakes Golf Club in Coaldale on April 14.
