Elk Ridge Resort Challenges Players at MJT’s Saskatchewan Finale

Waskesiu Lake, SK – (August 29, 2011) – The idyllic setting of Elk Ridge Resort, a tough tree-lined course adjacent to Saskatchewan’s Prince Albert National Park, was the site of the final 2011 Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stop for the province this season, which played out over August 27 and 28 in Waskesiu.

The low overall junior was 18-year-old Preston Rindal of Prince Albert, SK, who won the Boys 17-19 Division by five strokes over his nearest competitor (75+70=145). “I play the MJT to see where I sit with the elite juniors in the province and it feels great to come out on top in my last junior tournament. I didn’t lose a ball and putted really well,” commented Rindal. In second place was 17-year-old Aaron Vogel from Regina, who shot 73+77=150, while third place was a tie at 161 total score between Luc Pauli, 17, of Prince Albert (78+83) and Cole Bergen, 17, of Warman (86+75).

In the Boys 14-16 Division, Lanigan’s Garret Blair, 16, was the winner after he fired rounds of 79+72=151, commenting, “I struck the ball really well and kept it in play. My highlight was my bunker shot on 16 that was inches from going in. It feels really good to finally win after my two second place finishes this year.” Saskatoon’s Ty Campbell, 14, was the runner-up with scores of 85+78=163, and rounding out the top three was Cory Sawchuk, 14, from Prince Albert (80+84=164).

Twelve year old Kristian Houk was the winner of the Boys 13 and Under Division with scores of 87+83=170. Houk, from North Battleford, was very pleased with his first win, stating, “I play the MJT because I like the people who run it and it feels good because it is my first win. I am just really happy. I never had doubt in my head. I played focused.” Second place belonged to Regina’s Justin Bourassa, 12, after he carded 85+89=174, and three strokes back in third place was Matthew Douglas, 13, also of Regina, who shot 92+85=177.

The Girls Division featured a duel between Ricki-Lee Scott, 17, of Whitewood and Kayla Sawchuk, 12, from Prince Albert, where with a strong opening round and a solid second day, Scott would earn the win (84+89=173). “I thought coming out to Elk Ridge would be a good experience and I had played an MJT here last year, “she said. “A tournament highlight could be getting three birdies in a row.”
In the Mr. Lube Long Drive contest, winners for each division were Justin Bourassa, Riley Grona of Coronach, Preston Rindal and Ricki-Lee Scott, while the Sundog Eyewear Closest to the Pin division winners were Matthew Douglas, Garrett Blair, Aaron Vogel and Kayla Sawchuk. The Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Dhrake Berezowski of Prince Albert, Zach Hurd of Prince Albert, Matt Turchet of Saskatoon and Kayla Sawchuk.
