Six-under-Par paving Roadley’s ‘Road to College Golf’ on the MJT at Winkler

For Immediate Release – Winkler, MB – (June 13, 2011) –
The Winkler Centennial Golf Club in Winkler, Manitoba, was the site of some great junior golf performances over the weekend as 67 young players competed in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Manitoba Series presented by Lethbridge College. Lethbridge College sponsors three events on the MJT and offers $500 scholarships to players who enter their Professional Golf Management Program and compete on the golf team, all part of the MJT being the ‘Road to College Golf’ for aspiring young players in Canada.

Although players enjoyed calm and sunny skies during round one at Winkler, windy, tough conditions prevailed on day two to yield some higher than normal scores for most in the field. Not so for Winnipeg’s Jenna Roadley, 17, who cleaned up in the Girls division, firing a blistering final round of 70 to run away with the gold medal (72-70=142). “It feels really good to win the title, but even better because I played very well,” said Roadley, who has won several times on the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour with improvement each year, and has now earned a shortlisted spot on MJT Team Canada to the Srixon International Junior Classic in Australia this fall.

Dana Todd’s 75 on the first day helped her maintain second place (75-86=161) while 12-year-old Camryn Roadley, younger sister to Jenna, played some consistent golf and medaled for the first time (89-85=174).

Bret Thompson, 17, of Winnipeg, MB, won the Boys 17-19 gold medal as well as a shortlisted spot to Australia after shooting scores of 71-76 for a 147 total. It wasn’t easy though, as Brett Roeland, 17, of Winnipeg, battled back all day (72-76=148), and they were tied going in to the last hole. Roeland made par while Thompson made a fantastic birdie on the par five by hitting it in two and then two-putting for the win, saying, “my tournament highlight was the four-iron I hit from the trees on 18 to reach the par five in two – it feels awesome to win.” The bronze medal went to Alex McDonald, 19, of Devlin, ON, who was tied for the lead after round one with his opening 71 but a final round 79 would find him finishing a few strokes shy.

Travis Fredborg, 15, of Selkirk, MB, has been playing well all year and it showed with his 75-77 (152) scores in tough conditions which secured him his first MJT Boys 14-16 division title. He cited his highlight as when he knew he was tied with seven holes left and went even-par to clinch the title. “I came really close last tourney so this (win) just feels good.” Tied for the silver medal were Connor Shaw, 15, of Dauphin, MB (79-74), and Brenden Setter, 16, also of Selkirk (78-75), who both came back hard in day two firing 74 and 75 respectively to make Fredborg earn his keep.

Stefan Lavallee, 13, of Steinbach, MB, playing in his first MJT event this season, fired 74-78 for a two-day total of 152 and won the Boys 13 and under title by seven shots over Sam Diamond, 12, of Winnipeg (77-82=159). “I feel like I have accomplished a huge goal,” said Lavallee, who counted keeping the ball in the fairway as key to his victory. Chad Boyle, 13, also of Winnipeg, hung on to third place with his rounds of 79-83 (162).

In the Mr. Lube Long Drive competition, divisional winners in various age groups were Cameron McIntrye (Rossmere Golf Club), Jack Werhun (Elmhurst Golf and Country Club), Dylan Thornborough (Glenboro Golf and Country Club) and Dana Todd (St. Charles Country Club). The Sundog Eyewear Skills Competition winners for the four age groups were Chad Boyle (Rossmere Golf Club), Jack Werhun, Caleb Dillingham (Scotswood Links) and Hannah Diamond (St. Charles Country Club). Golf Town Comeback Award winners in each division were Daniel Hyun (Southwood Golf and Country Club), Connor Shaw (Dauphin Lake Golf Club), Jordan Sinclair (Heron Landing Golf Club) and Camryn Roadley (Glendale Golf Club).

The next Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stop in Manitoba is at Carman Golf Club in Carman on July 6-7, a qualifier for the Texas Junior Golf Tour’s Barton Creek Holiday Classic in TX, USA. Full details and online registration can be found at www.maplejt.com.
