SCOBIE SOARS AT OSPREY VALLEY ON MJT

Brighton, ON – (August 24, 2010) –
The Hoot Course of picturesque Osprey Valley Golf Club in Alton played host over the past three days to the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), where players competed over 54 holes for division titles in the MJT Ontario Tour Championship.

Mike Skimson, Canadian PGA Professional and MJT Tournament Director, said, when summing up the conditions for the tournament, “The weather was decent Saturday. Players battled some rain on Sunday, and it was windy and cool Monday. The course was in fantastic shape and proved to be a great test for all age groups.”

Matthew Scobie, 15, of Ajax, continued his dominant play on the MJT and fired rounds of 74-72-75 (221) to finish eight strokes ahead of his age group competitors in Boys 14-16, and four strokes ahead of the entire field. “It is a great feeling (to win),” he said. “I was able to hit fairways and greens and bounce back after making mistakes on some holes.” Tied for second place behind Scobie in his division were Jamie Cherutti, 16, of Aurora (78-73-78) and Luke Moser, 16, of Waterloo (74-77-78).

The Boys 17-19 title was won by Brian Jurkiewicz, 17, of Hamburg, New York, after he carded 71-72-82 (225). “I just thought to myself to keep making pars,” he said about coming down the final stretch, “My highlight was chipping in on the 10th hole on Monday. Cody (Bergamin) had me worried on the front nine.” Bergamin, 18, of Downsview, shot 78-77-77 (232) to finish second in the division. Third place went to Dylan Hamara, 17, of Cambridge (76-80-80=236).

Craig Stefureak, 13, of Caledonia, ended the regular season the way he began it in May – with another victory in Boys 13 and under – after shooting 74-77-80 (231) to beat runner-up Nick Petryna, 13, of Sudbury, by two strokes. “The highlight for me was my birdie on 18 to win by two strokes,” said Stefureak. “Nick (Petryna) was ahead of me at one point during the final round. I feel happy to win.”
Max Clift, 12, of Kitchener, continued his steady play and placed third with scores of 81-77-76 (234).

The Girls division title went to Rachel Pollock, 16, of Guelph, whose wire-to-wire victory came with excellent rounds of 77-76-82 (235). “Yesterday I stuck a wedge on 15 to an inch,” she said. “I hit a lot of fairways which made it easier to score and hit a lot of greens. It feels good to win the final tournament – a nice way to the end of the competitive season.” Second place went to Kirsten Degutis, 17, of Waterloo, who shot 81-86-85 (252), finishing four strokes better than Alisha Corringham, 15, of Pickering, who came third (86-84-86=256).

Divisional winners in the Skills Competitions included Craig Stefureak, Will Eberlee of Caledon, Dylan Hamara and Rachel Pollock for the Mr. Lube Long Drive, with Max Clift, Colin Abbot of Port Stanley, Alexander Loft of Mississauga, and Alisha Corringham for the Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin. The Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Max Clift, Matthew Chiasson of Cambridge, Neil Khosla of Mississauga, and Kimberly Risulmi of Milton.

The MJT now commences the Ontario One Day Fall Series with stops in Guelph, Avon, Mississauga and Cambridge, before the nationwide season ends with the Boston Pizza National Championship presented by Callaway at Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa in Phoenix, Arizona, November 19-21.
