HERPERGER HOT WITH 5-UNDER WINNING SCORE AT MJT’S FINORA CLASSIC

North Battleford, SK – (June 7, 2010) –
Day one of the season opening two-day Finora Classic on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour at North Battleford Golf and Country Club was wet and drawn out by an hour’s rain delay, however day two had great weather for the strong field of competitive junior golfers who were vying for division titles and a paid exemption into a high level junior event in the USA.

Mike Herperger, 18, of Humboldt, blasted the soggy, tough putting course with outstanding scores of 69-70 (139) to finish at five-under-par, leaving most players wondering what happened. Herperger won the Boys 17-19 gold medal and the exemption into a Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) event in the USA with his low overall score. Runner-up in this division was 2009 MJT Cleveland Golf Player of the Year, Jerry Christiansen, 17, of Saskatoon, who fired 78-71 (149), while Jared Tupper, 17, of Meadow Lake, came third with scores of 71-79 (150).

Taylor Cook, 16, of North Battleford, won the Boys 14-16 gold medal on his home course after firing 79-75 (154). Runner-up was Aaron Vogel, 16, of Regina, who shot 81-75 (156), and third spot went to Matthew Erickson, 16, of Saskatoon (84-74=158).

Nathan Corrin, 13, of Moose Jaw, carded 81-84 (165) to win the Boys 13 and under division by two strokes. “This is the best junior tour to play in,” said Corrin, about his reason to play in the tournament. “I saved a good par on day one after hitting it in the water. I felt good (about winning). It was a tight battle right to the end.” Prince Albert junior golfers Zach Hurd, 13, and Cory Sawchuk, 12, took second and third place in the division with scores of 84-83 (167) and 85-83 (168) respectively.

Danielle Pinder, 17, of Saskatoon, played very well and will be a tough contender throughout the year at future events with her Girl’s division winning scores of 75-76 (151). “Everything was great, I had two good, solid rounds,” she said. “My goals are to build up for the college season.”

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Zach Hurd, Matthew Erickson, Scott Pinder, 18, of Saskatoon, and Danielle Pinder. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Cory Sawchuk, Aaron Vogel, Taylor Afseth, 17, of Saskatoon and Kayla Swachuk. Many draw prizes were also awarded, as well as a special new category of Golf Town ‘Comeback Awards.’
