PLAY-OFF GREAT SEND OFF TO MJT SEASON IN BC

VANCOUVER, B.C. - (October 18, 2010) –
The final stop on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT British Columbia One Day Fall Series played out in perfect golfing weather at University Golf Club in Vancouver this past Saturday, October 16, where a three-way playoff was needed to decide the overall champion.

Oscar Baek, 15, of Coquitlam, Callum Robinson, 16, of Langley, and Austin Hughes, 15, of Tsawwassen, tied for the lead after all shooting great scores of one-under-par 71, so headed into a playoff where Hughes parred to finish third, Robinson birdied to finish second, and Baek eagled to win low overall and the Boys 14-16 title. “I hit my drive on the playoff hole into the rough and I had a difficult left to right shot from 198 yards. I hit my second shot two feet from the pin and eagled for the win,” outlined Baek, who named his great ball striking and getting up and down in many difficult places as key to his victory. “I feel great about winning the last tournament here at University Golf Club. I feel proud about myself and I feel on top of the world.”

Ryan Grill, 17, of Abbotsford, ended his solid season on a high note after firing 75 and winning the Boys 17-19 title by two strokes over Matthew Dorion, 17, of Surrey. “I feel good because this was the last tournament of the year,” said Grill, who aims to play four to five times a week during the off-season. Brendan Southwind, 18, of Vancouver, finished third place in the division (78).

Two 11-year-olds tied for the lead in the Boys 13 and under division, after Harry Huang of Vancouver, and Roy Kang of North Vancouver, both shot 80, although Huang took home the first place prizing based on retrogression. Just one stroke back was Patrick Tan, 13, of Vancouver (81).

Similarly in the Girls division, Rachel Shi, 15, of Vancouver, and Lauren Atkinson, 17, of Bow, Washington State, tied for the lead after they both carded 84. Shi claimed the first place prizing based on retrogression, and stated, “I feel great – I was lucky today. It was a surprise to me because I do not get prizes most of the time.” Third place went to Songeun Lee, 14, of Surrey.

The Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition prizes in each division were won by Jae Wook Lee, 11, of Langley, Trevor Garofano, 16, of Coquitlam, Bryn Cartwright, 17, of Vancouver, and Songeun Lee, while Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin competition winners were Roy Kang, Austin Hughes (who almost aced the hole), Matt Dorion and Songeun Lee.

A number of the juniors in the province are now looking forward to the MJT’s invitation-only Boston Pizza National Championship presented by Callaway at Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa in Phoenix, AZ, November 20-21, where 60 players from across Canada will compete for national division titles.
