WILSON WAGES WAR WITH THE WIND AT MJT’S MACLEOD SAVINGS STOP

Claresholm, AB - (September 8, 2009) – The weather at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s stop at The Bridges at Claresholm Golf Club in Claresholm went from perfect conditions at 10:00 a.m. in the morning of September 6th to vicious winds of 70km per hour by noon, rendering conditions extremely difficult for the competitive junior golfers. This event was the first of two one-day tournaments in the province sponsored by Macleod Savings and Credit Union.

MJT Tournament Director, Trent Matson, CPGA, stated that the wind was so strong it blew away the tour tent and other event paraphernalia. “The course played to about 80 par today,” he said. “It was a minimum three club wind out there, with most holes running sideways from the wind, making shots even more difficult.”

Dylan Wilson, 15, of Okotoks, was low overall and Boys 14-16 Champion with an outstanding 78 in those conditions. Wilson said he ‘putted really well and got it in the hole. I hit a lot of solid shots today.’ Finishing in second place in this division was Derek Field, 16, of Calgary, who shot 84. There was a tie for third place at 87 between Ryan O’Donnell, 16, of Lethbridge, and Drew Barvir, 15, of Dewinton.

In the Boys 13 and under division, winner Matt Williams, 13, of Calgary, put together an impressive round of 81, saying ‘that was one of the better rounds that I have played.’ In second place was Derek Roach, 13, also of Calgary (89), while third place honours went to Theoren Olver, 13, of Three Hills (90).

Newcomer Craig Ryan, 17, of St. Albert, bested the field in Boys 17-19 by hitting really solid shots, ‘just trying to survive out there’, and won after carding an 83. Runner-up was Kade Grant-Johansen, 17, of Chestermere (85), and finishing third was Mitch Taylor, 17, of Calgary (87).

New member Tara Stewart, 16, of Calgary, won the closely contested Girls Division in her first start on the MJT, shooting 91 to edge out Grace Howie, 14, of Calgary by one shot. Aryn Bartoshyk, 17, of Lethbridge, finished three strokes back to take third place.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Theoren Olver, Dylan Wilson, Mitch Taylor and Aryn Bartoshyk. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Zach Friesen, 15, of Lethbridge, and Kat Kennedy, 14, of Okotoks. There were also many draw prize winners in the tournament.

The second and final stop of the MJT Macleod Savings and Credit Union One Day Series is at Nanton Golf Club in Nanton on September 13th. For more information or to register, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
