FLEMING SCOTLAND-BOUND AFTER MJT’S BRANDT LEVERS MEMORIAL

Lacombe, AB - (May 18, 2009) – Players on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) fought through strong winds and rain at Lacombe Golf Club in Lacombe over the long weekend while competing in the Brandt Levers Memorial for their division titles and an exemption into the Kingdom of Fife Matches in St. Andrews, Scotland, UK, this August.

It was weather fit for Scotland, as the sun shone to begin the round, but strong winds came up and it even rained on the back nine as Riley Fleming, 15 of Airdrie, battled with Zak Griffiths of Red Deer, for the boys 14-16 champion’s trophy. "I knew Griffiths was close, and I never forgot about him but tried to play smart and not make any double bogies,” said Fleming. “He needed a few birdies to catch me."

Fleming carded rounds of 69-74 under tough conditions to win the division and the spot on MJT Team Canada to Scotland as the eligible qualifier, while Griffiths finished in second place at 69-78. Third place in the division went to Spencer Dorowicz, 15, of Olds, who aced the third hole and followed it up with a double bogey on the fourth. "It really didn't matter, I was so excited to make a one on number three, that I shanked it straight right on number four,” said Dorowicz. “I got it together after that and played really well to finish."

The overall low for the tournament went to Sang Gyun Lee, 17, of Calgary, who shot 69-71 to finish with a two-day total of 140, winning the boys 17-19 division. Lee said he ‘played solidly all throughout the round, and just tried to keep it under par.’ He was very excited as this was his second MJT victory in a row, making it ‘a great start to the year!’ Tying for second place in this division at 148 total score were Ryan Werre, 17, of Redcliff, and Corbin Adams, 18, of Edmonton, who both shot 75-73.

Becky Martin, 15, of Medicine Hat, kept up her solid play on the MJT with rounds of 84-80 to claim the girls division title, bettering Ali Cronkwright, 16, of Calgary on the second day. Cronkwright held a slim one-shot lead going into day two, but that lead evaporated on the front nine as Martin went out in 38 and never looked back. ``It feels great to win, I hit a lot of good irons shots and just tried to keep it in the low 80`s today in the wind,” she said. Finishing in third place among the girls was Sabrine Garrison, 13, of Calgary (84-91).

In the boys 13 and under division, Patrick Murphy, 12, of Crossfield, Alberta, ‘kept his streak alive’ on the MJT and won in style, carding rounds of 76-74 to beat Nathan Corrin, 12, of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Corrin played wonderfully on the first day hanging in at one shot back, but the winds wreaked a bit of havoc on day two and he, along with the rest of the field, saw their scores rise. “At the beginning, I thought that Nathan was making a charge, but he ran into a little trouble,” said Murphy. “I just made a lot of pars, and stayed away from any big numbers.” Finishing third was Brett Pasula, 12, of Red Deer, who shot 84-87.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Patrick Murphy, Tyler Schwarz, 16, of Calgary, Corbin Adams and Becky Martin. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Nathan Corrin, Liam Leahy, 15, of Calgary, Nolan West, 17, of Rocky Mountain House, and Aryn Bartoshyk, 17, of Lethbridge.

The tournament paid tribute to the memories of Brandt Levers and his best friend, Tyler Tomaszeski, both former MJT members, who sadly passed away at ages 18 and 20 respectively. Levers was a two-time winner at Lacombe. The Levers family presented the divisional prizes; Riley Fleming was also awarded the Tyler Tomaszeski trophy for Sportsmanship by the Tomaszeski family.

The MJT continues its Alberta schedule on May 30th and 31st with the MJT Alberta Series at River’s Edge Golf Club in Okotoks. The tournament is a qualifier for the Jack Newton International Classic in Sydney, Australia. For more information or to register, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
