GREAT SCORES IN MJT SRIXON SERIES SOAKER AT UNIVERSITY GC

Vancouver, B.C. - (October 19, 2009) – Despite the drenching rain on Saturday October 17th during the final stop in the One Day Srixon Series on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), held at University Golf Club in Vancouver, B.C., many great scores in the 70's were posted. The tournament featured players from as far afield as Pelican Rapids (Manitoba), Lethbridge (Alberta), and Bow, WA (USA), and heralded the end of the regular season in B.C. for the national non-profit program, with only the Tour Championship in Phoenix, AZ, still to play out this November.

Megan Osland, 16, of Kelowna, made the trip to Vancouver worth her while by beating Canadian Junior Girls Champion Soo Bin Kim, 16, of Port Coquitlam, by one stroke to win the Girls division with a score of two-under-par (70). “I’m really happy with the way I played today,” said Osland. “I knew with the way I was hitting the ball I could come in with a good score considering the conditions. The course was definitely in good shape for being this late in the season but unfortunately the weather didn’t stand up. We had some sunny breaks but for the most part played in a downpour.” Anica Yoo, 15, also of Port Coquitlam, placed third among the Girls with a score of 73.

Brendan Southwind, 17, of Vancouver, who won the MJT Srixon Series stop in Point Roberts, WA, last weekend, repeated as playoff champion in the Boys 17-19 division after defeating Andy Yang, 17, of Coquitlam. Both had tied for the lead with a score of 73. “It feels good to win again for the second time in a row. The course was tough – it was even harder with the heavy rain,” said Southwind, who plans to play a couple of events in the USA during the off-season. There was a three-way tie for third place in the division between James Park, 17, of Vancouver, Brett Sherwood, 17, of Surrey, and Chris Lee, 17, of Coquitlam, who all posted a score of 78.

There were also ties for first place in both the Boys 14-16 and 13 and under divisions, which were decided on retrogression due to there being no time before dark for playoffs. Jay Kim, 16, of Surrey, who is en route to the Singha Thailand Junior World Championships with the MJT in November, claimed the 14-16 title over Michael Kim, 15, of North Vancouver, after they both shot 75. “I kept the ball in play and played smart,” said Jay Kim.” I feel great about winning!” Third place went to Vernon’s Brady Stead, 16, who shot 77.

Jun Kang, 13, of Port Moody, claimed his second MJT Boys 13 and under title in as many starts after Matthew Davis, 13, of Tsawwassen, lipped out on 18 to shoot 79 and tie for the lead but lost the trophy based on retrogression. Kevin Vigna, 13, of Burnaby, carded 81 to place third.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Roy Kang, 10, of North Vancouver, Jay Kim, Brett Sherwood and Soo Bin Kim. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Kevin Vigna, Tony Mak, 14, of Richmond, Andy Yang and Yvonne Zheng, 14, of Vancouver. There were also many draw prize winners in the tournament.

The MJT season winds up with the invitation-only National Tour Championship at Wigwam Golf Resort and Spa in Phoenix, AZ, November 21-22, where 72 players from across Canada will compete for national division titles. For more information, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
