THREE PLAYERS WIN INTERNATIONAL SPOTS AT MJT’S PERDUE OASIS EVENT

PERDUE, SK: Blustery prairie winds proved challenging in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s final stop in Saskatchewan this season at Perdue Oasis Golf Resort in Perdue on June 21st and 22nd, where junior golfers from Alberta, Manitoba, and all over Saskatchewan competed. Up for grabs were spots into two international events – the CAN-USA Team Matches in Tempe, AZ, and the Canada International Friendship Cup (CIFC) in British Columbia.

Despite Mother Nature’s curve ball on day two of the competition making birdie’s few and far between, Jesse Gibson, 16, of Saskatoon, SK, finished two strokes ahead of the field to come in with the tournament’s overall low score, claiming the Boys 14-16 division title and the spot to Arizona - his third international exemption this year on the MJT. Gibson shot 68-74 (142). Runner-up in the Boys 14-16 division was Aaron Cockerill, 16, of Stony Mountain, MB, who shot 70-74 (144), just one stroke ahead of Jordan Arndt, 15, of Furdale, SK (71-74=145).

Winner of the Boys 13 and under division was Brenden Setter, 13, of Selkirk, MB, who played consistent golf over the two-day tournament, shooting 79-78 (157). No stranger to being in the winner’s circle on the MJT, Setter also won the low score for his division on Mother’s Day weekend at the MJT’s Meadow’s Golf Club event in Manitoba, and now at qualifies for the Canada International Friendship Cup (CIFC) for boys aged 13 at Perdue. Runner-up was Conley Kriegler, 13, of Saskatoon, who fired 79-83 (162) and third place went to Liam Courtney, 13, also of Saskatoon (80-83=163). Fourth spot went to Connor Shaw, 12, of Thompson, MB, who managed to improve his second round score by four strokes coming in at 166 (85-81) and qualifying for the CIFC spot for boys aged 12.

In the Boys 17 and up division, Jay Hodgson, 18, of Saskatoon, shot 70-74 (144) to take the champion’s trophy, edging first-round leader Troy Bulmer, 17, also of Saskatoon, by one stroke. Bulmer shot 69-76 (145). Third place finisher was Michael Hiltz, 17, of Coronach, SK, who posted rounds of 76-71 (147).

Saskatoon players dominated the Girls division where Anna Young, 14, started out with a strong lead shooting 79, three strokes ahead of the field. Day two proved challenging for everyone, but Young managed to hang on by tying Thea Hedemann’s day two score, and finished with rounds of 79-83 (162) to win the division title. Hedemann, 15, took second place with scores of 82-83 (165), while Danielle Pinder, 15, came in third with scores of 85-90 (175).

The Perdue Oasis stop wraps the MJT’s Saskatchewan Series of four tournaments for 2008, while the MJT’s national multi-day season ends with the invitation-only Tour Championship at Nicklaus North Golf Club in Whistler, B.C., in August. Several Saskatchewan players will be in attendance once qualifying is completed across the country; for more information please visit www.maplejt.com.
