KWON SHOWS MJT PLAYER-OF-THE-YEAR FORM AT NORTHVIEW

SURREY, BC
– Superb fall weather was enjoyed by a full field of competitive junior golfers in a fitting finale to the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) British Columbia Fall Series, held at Northview Golf Club in Surrey on Saturday, October 11th.

Kevin Kwon, 13, of Coquitlam, closed out the season the way he began it, racking up his fourth Boys 13 and under title and cementing his status as the MJT Cleveland Golf Player of the Year for this division. Kwon, who moves up to the Boys 14-16 division next April, shot a 71 to run away with the win. David Cui, 12, of Richmond, carded 82 to place second and Jae Hoon Kim, 11, of Surrey, paced third with a score of 83.

Evan Slater, 16, of Vancouver, who shot a 74 to tie with Sunny Lee, 14, of Surrey, in the Boys 14-16 division, won his first MJT title based on retrogression. “The fairways and greens had some sand on them, but the course is really nice,” said Slater. “The highlight was having fun with the guys, playing a great and fun round of golf. To end the season with a win feels excellent!” The closely contested division had a five-way tie for third place at 77 between Ryan Grill, 15, of Abbotsford, Justin Lee, 14, of Maple Ridge, Mason Pimentel, 14, of Richmond, Mike Belle, 16, of Burnaby, and Chris Lee, 16, of Coquitlam.

The intermediate division of players 17 and up had a three-way tie for first place at 77 between Hyunil Kim, 21, of Port Coquitlam, Michael Wawryk, 18, of Delta, and Greg Pool, 21, of Langley. Kim, who took the title based on retrogression, cited his highlight as making a 15 foot birdie putt on 18 to win. “I was not expecting to win with my score – it was a little surprise. I’m always happy to win,” he said.

Great competition in the Girls division saw Taylor Kim, 14, of Surrey, edge Keanna Mason, 12, of Maple Ridge, to take the title. Kim shot 76, Mason posted a 77, and Valentina Trillo, 14, of Port Moody, shot 78, to finish one, two, three.

Mr. Lube Long Drive and Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin (KP) competitions were held on both the front and back nines in each age division. Kevin Kwon won both Long Drives, while Matthew Davis and Jae Hoon Lee/Jun Kang (tied) won the KPs for Boys 13 and under. Ryan Grill and Mickhail Hernandez, 16, of Richmond, won the Long Drives while Evan Slater and Sunny Lee won the KPs for Boys 14-16. Michael Wawryk and Daniel Cho, 19, of Coquitlam, won the Long Drives while Jeff Gordon, 19, of Vancouver, and Hyunil Kim won the KPs for Boys 17 and up. Emily Nicol, 14, of Kelowna, won both Long Drives while Taylor Kim and Alice Nakamura, 15, of Maple Ridge, won the KPs for the Girls division.
