GIRLS MASTER MJT AT MCCLEERY WITH A PAIR OF 68'S,
PLAY-OFFS IN THREE DIVISIONS

Vancouver, B.C. – The first stop on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) British Columbia Fall Series was held at McCleery Golf Club in Vancouver on Saturday, September 13th, where a full field of competitive junior golfers competed under sunny skies. Play-offs were needed to decide three out of four division winners in the successful event, which had an extensive wait-list.

An outstanding pair of three-under-par 68’s were blasted by two girls - Helen Qin, 18, from China, and newcomer Sylvia Park, 15, from Vancouver, who tied for the lead in the Girls division. Qin, who won the MJT- PGA of BC Junior Girls Champion title at Northview Golf Club in a play-off back in August, won again after defeating Park with a birdie on the first play-off hole. “I feel happy and excited! I did my best!” said Qin, who cited her straight drives as key to her ultimate victory. Taylor Kim, 13, of Surrey, placed third with a score of 74.

John Lee, 17, from Port Coquitlam, started the fall series exactly as he did the spring one by claiming the Boys 17 and up division title once again at McCleery. He defeated Penticton’s Cole Campbell, 21, on the second play-off hole after they had tied for the lead with a pair of 76's. “Putting was the main reason (for winning),” said Lee. “It feels great (to win) since it’s the end of the season and it will give me the confidence for next year.” Third spot went to Hyunil Kim, 21, also of Port Coquitlam, who carded a 77.

A three-way play-off in the Boys 13 and under division ended in victory for Wyatt Racette, 13, of Burnaby, who beat Jaesung Choi, 12, and Kenny Zhou, 13, on the first play-off hole with a birdie after they all tied at 83. “All I wanted to do coming down the stretch was make pars and limit my mistakes,” said Racette. “For me, the course played pretty short and because of that I was able to go after almost every par five in two, and that was one of my advantages. It feels absolutely great (to win). One of my goals was to win an event on the MJT while I was still 13 – tomorrow’s my 14th birthday.”

The Boys 14-16 division had a clear winner in Mason Pimentel, 14, of Richmond, who shot 74 to win by two strokes. “The greens could have been a bit smoother – McCleery couldn’t be any harder,” he said. “After making several bad mistakes I relied on my birdie opportunities to turn things around. It feels great (to win), having not been very consistent lately. This round has made such a positive influence on my game.” Runner-up in this division was Chris Lee, 16, of Coquitlam, who shot 76. Evan Slater, 16, of Vancouver, carded a 77 to finish in third place.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Joel Termuende, 13, of Cranbrook, Dylan Hughes, 15, of North Vancouver, John Lee and Helen Qin. The Sundog Skills Competition divisional winners were Howard Kim, 16, of Coquitlam, and Helen Qin.
