Clegg and Lee join MJT Team Canada after MJT`s HSBC Bank Canada Classic

SURREY, B.C. – Cool weather prevailed during the two-day Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) HSBC Bank Canada Classic at Hazelmere Golf Club in Surrey, B.C., this past Mother’s Day weekend. The event was a double qualifier for spots on MJT Team Canada to the Scotland Kingdom of Fife Team Matches in St. Andrews, U.K., and the International Junior Golf Invitational in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Third-year MJT member Harrison Clegg, 15, of Langley, fired 75-72 (147) to claim low overall and the HSBC Bank Canada Classic Boys 14-16 division title in style, earning a spot on MJT Team Canada. Clegg, who cited his tournament highlight as his eagle on the 12th hole from the fairway, said he was coming down the stretch thinking, ‘Don’t make any large numbers.’ Runner-up in his division was China Junior Open champion Kevin Lee, 13, of Surrey, who has opted to play up a division. Lee, who also qualified for MJT Team Canada, shot back-to-back rounds of 75 for a 150 total score. Mackenzie Osborne, 16, of Comox, posted rounds of 77-77 (154) to edge his twin brother and first round leader, Graham, for third place in the division.

Another Tour veteran - 13-year-old Logan Hallwas of South Surrey - ran away with the HSBC Bank Canada Classic Boys 13 and under division title after brilliant rounds of 73-76 (149) put him way ahead of the pack. “The highlight for me was the 5-iron out of the left rough on 18 on day one. I put it to five feet (of the pin). On day two, coming down the stretch, I was thinking this is the best tournament I ever played. It means everything to win this tournament.” Nav Bains, 13, of Surrey, who is on his way to the World Youth Team Challenge in Illinois next month, shot 80-84 (164) to place second in the division, while Richard Zhang, 13, of Richmond, came third with scores of 82-83 (165).

In the Girls division, Jisoo Keel, 12, of Coquitlam, who was tied for the lead after 18 holes with Porsche Campbell, 15, of Vancouver, posted a great final round to win with scores of 79-76=155. “My highlight was on the 18th hole when I hit my 4-iron and put it very close (to the hole) – I was really happy because that secured a win for me,” said Keel. “I am really proud that I won this tournament – it was really tight competition. I’d like to thank my mom and grandpa for supporting me.” Keel is now shortlisted for the two girls spots on MJT Team Canada, which are determined after all the qualifiers across the country are completed. Campbell had to settle for third place with scores of 79-82 (161) behind Valentina Trillo, 13, of Port Moody (81-78=159). Both Campbell and Trillo will also be representing Canada at the World Youth Team Challenge.

Tony Elliott, 21, of Coquitlam, came from behind to win the HSBC Bank Canada Classic Boys 17 and up title after firing 77-73 (150). Elliott beat runner-up Keith Martin, 19, of Kelowna (77-76=153), by three strokes. After leading in the first round, Scott Cameron, 18, of Langley, ended up third in the division (75-79=154).

Divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Logan Hallwas, Pureum Lee, 16, of North Vancouver, Scott Cameron and Jisoo Keel. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Jackie Zhang, 10, of Richmond, Kevin Lee, David Stashuk, 17, of Coquitlam, and Valentina Trillo.

The MJT continues its British Columbia schedule on June 21st and 22nd at King’s Links Golf Club in Delta, with the Cattermole Group Classic – a qualifier for the Texas Junior Masters in San Antonio, TX, this August.
