Johns and Zaba Tie for Low Overall on MJT at Woodlawn

ESTEVAN, SK – The Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s only national junior tour run exclusively by Golf Professionals, wrapped its successful Saskatchewan season at Woodlawn Golf Club in Estevan on the Canada Day weekend. The two-day tournament also had qualifying spots for the Canada-International Friendship Cup matches at Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen, British Columbia, this August.

Mitchell Zaba, 18, of Deer Valley, SK, pulled ahead of first round leader Jeff Lucyk, 18, of Belcarres, and won the Boys 17 and up title by three strokes after firing 76-71 for a 147 total score. “Before the final round I had a game plan and I believe that sticking to it was very key,” said Zaba. “Coming down the stretch I just wanted to make pars because they were tough holes and I was not trying to force any shots. I was tied after 14 holes on the second round and made birdie on 15 to go ahead. Standing on the green of the 18th hole putting for birdie was a good feeling.” Runner-up Lucyk shot 73-77 (150) and third place in the division went to Brett Kuran, 18, of Winnipeg, MB, who shot 81-74 for a 155 total score.

In the Boys 14-16 division, Joshua Johns, 16, of Fort Qu’Appelle, SK, came from behind to post a great closing round of 71 for a 147 total score, which won him the title by six strokes. “I stayed focused on each shot while maintaining a calm mood and not getting too excited or too disappointed on shots,” he said, citing his tournament highlight as a one-putt eagle on the 7th hole. Jordan Hegglin, 15, of Earl Grey, SK, shot 74-79 (153) to place second in the division, and Michael Boymook, 15, of Saskatoon, SK, placed third with scores of 75-79 (154).

Zaba and Johns both receive exemptions into the Canada-International Friendship Cup matches in British Columbia as a result of their finishes.

Kaitlyn Jahnke, 15, of Herbert, SK, stated her positive attitude helped her win the Girls division with scores of 88-81 (169). Breanna White, 16, of Fort Qu’Appelle, and Kaitlyn Blackmer, 16, of Swift Current, SK, tied for second place at 176 total score after shooting 91-85 and 89-87 respectively.

Patrick Sanchez Mitchell, 13, of LaFleche, SK, ran away with the Boys 13 and under division title after firing 77-78 for a 155 total score. “I was relaxed and focused, just enjoying the moment,” he said, adding that the highlight for him was meeting new friends and having fun. Second spot went to 10-year-old Nathan Corrin of Moose Jaw, SK (91-88), and Jason Hengen, 12, of Estevan, finished third (104-106).

The Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition winners in each division were Nathan Corrin, Mark Mayrs, 14, of Regina, Brandt Van Cauwenberghe, 17, of Melita, MB, and Breanna White. The Sundog Skills Competition divisional winners were Michael Hengen, 14, of Estevan, Brandt Van Cauwenberghe and Anna Young, 13, of Saskatoon.
