Corboy King of King's Links

DELTA, B.C. – Canada’s only national junior golf tour run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), wrapped up a two-day tournament at the recently-renamed King’s Links Golf Club in Boundary Bay, Delta, this past weekend. The tournament was one out of the 40-event series run by the Boston Pizza-presented MJT, and also offered a qualifying spot on MJT Team Canada to the CAN/USA Matches at ASU Karsten Golf Club in Tempe, Arizona, this December.

Michael Corboy, 18, of Langley, BC, a five-year MJT veteran, claimed his first MJT division title in decisive fashion after firing 73-68 on the tricky links-style course. Corboy, who chipped in both rounds, once for eagle and once for birdie, had low overall score for the field and won the Boys 17 and up division by six strokes. “I feel excited I guess,” he said, when asked about how he felt about winning. “Coming down the stretch I thought to just stay focused on the hole (I was) on. I putted well the second day and my ball striking was consistent.” Maple Ridge juniors took both second and third place in the Boys 17 and up division - Cameron Harris, 17, shot 77-70 (147) and Han Baek, 18, shot 73-75 (148).

Corboy’s name now goes forward for the four-player team to compete in the CAN/USA Matches at ASU Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, AZ, this December. The rest of the team is qualifying at other MJT tournaments across the country.

Jay Kim, 14, of Surrey, BC, just managed to edge Matthew Hamilton, 15, of West Vancouver, BC, for victory among Boys 14-16. Kim fired 71-77 (148) to Hamilton’s 74-75 (149). “The key to my victory was I stayed focused and calm,” Kim said. “I was nervous because my playing partner Matthew (Hamilton) caught up to me down the stretch and I knew I had to go very aggressive. I feel great about winning.” Third place in the division was claimed by Steven Nakajima, 16, of Delta, BC, who posted back-to-back scores of 76 for a 152 total.

Another set of back-to-back 76s won Mason Pimentel, 13, of Richmond, BC, his second Boys 13 and under division title this season on the MJT. “It feels great, knowing all that hard work paid off in the end,” he said, citing his chip-in birdie on hole 15 as a highlight. “A lot of great shots helped my consistency and I felt confident approaching the 18th hole.” 11-year-old Tony Ko of Langley placed second in the division after firing 77-81 (158). One stroke back was Tyler Salsbury, 13, of Enumclaw, WA, who took third place with scores of 81-78 (159).

Linda Luo, 14, of Richmond, put together her two best tournament rounds to date to run away with the Girls division title. Luo followed up her 80 on day one with a brilliant two-under-par 71 for a 151 total score. “My mom said if I didn’t shoot in the 70’s I won’t go back to China,” she joked. “I was thinking, coming down the stretch, ‘I’ve got to make birdies and pars so I can go back.’ “ Runner-up was 10-year-old Keanna Mason of Maple Ridge who shot 88-99 (187), and Danelle Girard, 17, of Coquitlam, BC, finished in third spot (97-93=190).

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Danny Yu, 13, of Surrey, Steven Nakajima, Michael Corboy and Linda Luo. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Kieran Barill, 13, of North Vancouver, BC, Keaton Bast, 15, of Delta, Han Baek and Linda Luo.

The MJT continues its British Columbia schedule on July 16 through 18 with the Sun Mountain Okanagan Junior Championship at Predator Ridge Golf Resort in Vernon, BC. This 54-hole tournament is also a qualifier for the Canada International Friendship Cup Matches at Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen, BC, this August.
