Gibson Qualifies for China Junior Open at
MJT-CPGA of Saskatchewan Junior Championship

SASKATOON, SK. – Sunshine on day one quickly turned to drenching rain at the two-day Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) tournament at Perdue Oasis Golf Resort in Saskatoon this past weekend. The tournament, in which junior golfers from Alberta, Manitoba and all over Saskatchewan participated, was part of the six-event CPGA Zone Junior Championship series initiated by the MJT six years ago, and was presented by Finora, a substantial Canadian-based supplier and processor of beans, peas and lentils. Up for grabs was one spot for boys up to age 18 in the 2008 China Junior Open.

After rain rendered the course unplayable during round two, the event was shortened to 18 holes. This took nothing away from the fact that Jesse Gibson, 15, and Scott Thompson, 18, deserved victory in their respective divisions of Boys 14-16 and 17 and up after both firing brilliant rounds of four-under-par 68’s on day one. With Thompson turning 19 in September, Gibson claims the exemption into the China Junior Open, an event in which the 2007 Boys 11-14 Champion was MJT member Kevin Lee.

Tied for second place four strokes behind Gibson in his division were Carson Kallis, 14, of Red Deer, AB, and Scott Pinder, 15, of Saskatoon, both with even-par scores of 72. Taylor Smith, 18, of Swift Current, SK, was runner-up to Thompson among Boys 17 and up with his score of 71, and Cory Southam, 17, of Strongfield, SK, placed third with a 72.

Kyla Reay, 18, of Saskatoon, racked up another MJT win in the Girls division and was crowned MJT-CPGA of Saskatchewan Girls Junior Champion with a fine score of 76. Second spot went to Kaitlyn Blackmer, 16, of Swift Current, who shot 87. Third place was a tie between Kaitlyn Jahnke, 15, of Herbert, SK, and Kelsey Klatt, 16, of Fort Qu’Appelle, SK, both of whom shot 89.

The MJT-CPGA of Saskatchewan Boys 13 and under Junior Champion was Travis Busch, 13, of Lloydminster, AB, who shot 83 to beat runner-up Taylor Cook, 13, of North Battleford, SK, by four strokes. 10-year-old Nathan Corrin of Moose Jaw, SK, fresh off playing at the World Youth Team Challenge (WYTC) in Illinois, USA, finished third in the division with a score of 88. Other participants at Perdue Oasis who has also just played in the WYTC were Zak Griffiths, 14, of Red Deer (74) and Anna Young, 13, of Saskatoon (91).

The MJT wraps its Saskatchewan schedule on June 30th and July 1st at Woodlawn Golf Club in Estevan. For more information or to register, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
