COWAN CROWNED MJT-ALBERTA PGA JUNIOR CHAMPION
CARSTAIRS, AB – A major event on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), endorsed by the Alberta Professional Golfers’ Association (APGA), played out Monday through Wednesday, July 24th to 26th, on Carstairs Golf Course in Carstairs, AB. The 54-hole tournament, the MJT-Alberta PGA Junior Championship, is part of a series of national events pioneered by the MJT in conjunction with the provincial CPGA zones. Junior golfers from all over Alberta took part, with the low overall scorer receiving an exemption into the North American Junior Championship in New Braunfels, Texas, this December.
A one-stroke victory claimed this exemption for Evan Cowan, 14, of Coaldale and Land-O-Lakes Golf Club, who fired 70-75-73 for a three-day total of 218, also scooping the MJT-Alberta PGA Junior Boys 14-16 champion’s trophy. Runner-up in this division was Eric Allard, 15, of Calgary, who shot 73-75-71 (219). Six strokes back in third place with scores of 74-76-75 (225) was Jason Thiels, 15, of Olds.
After a close race, Nolan Hamilton, 18, of Calgary and Strathmore Golf Club, was the MJT-Alberta PGA Junior Boys 17 and up champion after posting scores of 73-77-71 (221), edging Sean Sinclair, 17, of Cochrane (75-75-72=222). “Sean was three under on the back nine, which had me worried,” said Hamilton, “but I limited my mistakes and outlasted everyone else. My Long Drive win was the highlight for me as well as this being my first ever tournament win on the MJT.” There was a tie for third place in this division at 223 total score between Corey Kristianson, 17, of Brooks (75-73-75), and Steven Becker, 18, of Red Deer (76-71-76).
