VETERANS TAKE TITLES AT MJT'S TURTLE CREEK SERIES AT LACOMBE

Lacombe, AB – Veteran players on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) took the division titles in the recent MJT stop at Lacombe Golf Club, which was sponsored by golf apparel company, Turtle Creek Collection.

Perfect weather conditions were enjoyed by the competitive field in the two-day tournament, where the low overall score of 74-70 (144) was claimed by Gary Helgason, 17, of Edmonton.

“I played solid throughout – the last round was tight all day but I ended up with a few good breaks,” said Helgason, who also took the Boys 17 and up title. “This Tour gives me the chance to compete with the top juniors from around the province and it’s always nice to come out on top.”

Kyle Morrison, 18, of Red Deer, placed second in the division three strokes back of Helgason with rounds of 72-75 (147), and third place went to Jeff Windle, 18, also of Red Deer (76-73=149).

The Boys 14-16 division title was won by Connor Elekes, 16, of Calgary, who birdied the last hole to beat runner-up Dillon Robinson, 16, of Calgary by three strokes. “It’s always nice to win and even nicer to win two years in a row,” said Elekes, a repeat champion of this event. Elekes, who said it helps to play the MJT multi-day tournaments on quality courses and learn how to win, shot 74-76 for a 150 total score.

Robinson shot 78-75 (153) while third place was a tie at 154 between Joseph Knight, 16, of Calgary, and Kyle Wilson, 14, of Chestermere. Knight shot 79-75 and Wilson 78-76.

Scott Lowe, 13, of Calgary, had a four shot lead going into the final round in the Boys 13 and under division and held on to close with scores of 74-76 (150) and the winner’s trophy. “The highlight for me was hitting (the ball) out of a tree on number 12,” said Lowe. “The win is a big boost because coming into the tournament I was really struggling so to play well feels good.”

Second place in the division went to Carson Kallis, 13, of Red Deer, who shot back-to-back rounds of 78 for a 156 total score. Third place was claimed by Matthew Vacy-Lyle, 13, of Drumheller, with scores of 84-78 (162).

Jen McLean, 17, of Devon, won the Girls division title over local player Hilary Clark, 16, shooting 82-77 for a 159 total.

Division winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Kallis, Knight, Jimmy Cowan (Calgary), and McLean. The Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition division winners were Lowe, Jeff Potter (Drumheller), T.J. Keil (Edmonton) and Clark.
The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, now in its 7th season, is presented by Boston Pizza and is Canada’s only major junior tour run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals and endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart.
