SCOTLAND MJT TEAM MEMBER TAKES LOW OVERALL AT FOXWOOD

BADEN, ON. ? A first round 5-under 67 by Jamie MacDonald, 17, of LaSalette was the opening highlight of the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT)?s weekend event in Baden at Foxwood Golf Club, where competitive juniors competed over two days.

The tournament, presented by Boston Pizza, was one of four events held across the country this past weekend as part of the MJT's seventh season, providing hundreds of junior golfers in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia an opportunity to experience good competition. Later this year, tournaments will also be held in Saskatchewan, Quebec and Nova Scotia.

MacDonald, who plays out of Delhi Golf Club, followed up his outstanding 5-under-par round with a 77 on the second day, which failed to hold off a hard charge from Mike McKenzie, 17, of Cambridge. McKenzie, a Galt Country Club junior, posted rounds of 73-70 (143) to edge MacDonald by one and capture the Boys 17 and up division title.

?Jamie is a very solid player. I always have a great time playing with him,? said McKenzie, who credited his strategy of attacking every pin to go as low as possible for his victory. ?It is nice to come from behind to win.?

Third place in the division went to Chris Wilcock, 18, of Kitchener, who fired 73-72 for a 145 total.

The low overall score in the tournament was posted in the Boys 14-16 division, claimed by Josh Bamberger, 15, of Waterloo. Bamberger enjoyed his home course advantage on Foxwood and fired outstanding rounds of 69-72 to wrap with a three-under-par total score of 141 and the division champion title.

?I knew the course well and just tried to stick to my game plan even though Mike (Gligic), Braeden (Cryderman) and Johnny (Hall) were in contention,? said Bamberger, who proved he well deserves his spot on the Maple Leaf Team to Scotland this August, won in a recent MJT qualifier at Crosswinds Golf Club.

Second place in the division went to Michael Gligic, 15, of Burlington, who posted scores of 77-76 (153), while Braeden Cryderman, 15, of Huntsville, and Johnny Hall, 16, of Langton, tied for third at 154 total score.

The Boys 13 and under division was won by 13-year-old Barrett McCarthy of Oakville, whose excellent closing round of 70 pulled him way ahead of the pack, beating first round leader Brent McKenzie by five strokes. ?I never thought I won until I was on the 18th green,? said McCarthy, a junior member at Hidden Lake Golf Club. He shot 77-70 (147) while McKenzie, 13, of Cambridge, finished with 71-81 (152). Three strokes back in third place was Gajan Sivabalasingham, 11, of Markham, who scored 79-76 (155).

Danielle Lewis, 18, of Thornhill, took the Girls division title with scores of 79-81 (160). Lewis, who plays out of Uplands Golf Club, is heading to University in the States on a golf scholarship this fall. Runner up Lauren Jack, 16, of Fonthill, shot 89-89 (178).

Division winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Barrett McCarthy, Braeden Cryderman, Jamie MacDonald and Danielle Lewis.

The Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition division winners were Gajan Sivabalasingham, Jack Fleming, 15, of Waterloo, Scott Simon, 17, of Aurora, and Danielle Lewis.

The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, now in its 7th season, is Canada?s only major junior tour run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals and endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart. In Ontario, the program is run by CPGA's Dave Smallwood, Mike Skimson and Steve Georghiades. Some of the country?s top juniors have taken part in the MJT, such as Inah Park, the reigning Canadian Junior Girls? Champion, and all four members of Team Canada, the national junior boys team.

The next local tournament on the Boston Pizza-sponsored Tour is the MJT-Ontario PGA Junior Championship at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, July 1-2. For more information or to register, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-GOLF.
