MAPLE LEAF JUNIOR GOLF TOUR TO SEND CANADIAN CONTINGENT TO INTERNATIONAL MATCH PLAY IN MEXICO

Vancouver, B.C. ? The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) held its first qualifier for the Canadian contingent in the fourth annual International Junior Golf Team Matches in Mexico this past weekend, at Meadow Gardens Golf Course in Pitt Meadows, B.C.

The two day tournament was to qualify two boys and one girl for spots on the Maple Leaf Team to the International Junior Golf Team Matches at Las Colinas Golf Club in Cuernavaca, Mexico, this August. The remainder of the eight player team of six boys and two girls will qualify at upcoming MJT tournaments in Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario.

17-year-old Seon Kim of Surrey, B.C., fired a sizzling three-under par 69 to close with a total score of 141, winning both the Boys 17 and up division and first spot on the Maple Leaf Team. Runner-up Devin Carrey, 17, of South Surrey, B.C., who helped the Canadian contingent place second in the 2004 international event, shot 73-72 (145) at Meadow Gardens to place himself in contention for a repeat appearance as first alternate in 2005.

The Boys 14-16 division witnessed a thrilling finish between Sean Craigon, 15, of Maple Ridge, B.C., and Jonnie Motomochi, 14, of White Rock, B.C., who eagled the last hole to edge out Craigon by one shot.

Motomochi, who shot 74-71 (145), captured his division title and the second spot on the Maple Leaf Team to Mexico. Craigon shot 72-74 (146). Mitchell Maier, 16, of Langley, B.C., placed third with scores of 75-73 (148) and Bill Hole, 16, of Vancouver, came in fourth posting rounds of 78-71 (149).

The third spot on the team went to Kristina Gargaro, 15, of Port Moody, B.C., who posted scores of 71-76 (147) to run away with the Girls division title by 10 strokes. ?I shot one-under-par in the first round, my best score ever, which helped a lot,? said an emotional Gargaro. ?My short game saved me on a lot of holes. I never gave up when I played bad. This win is a good accomplishment after all my hard work and training.?

An amazing hole-in-one by 9-year-old Jisoo Keel of Coquitlam, B.C., helped secure her a tie for second place with Chelsea Kim, 15, of Port Coquitlam, B.C. Keel shot 79-78 (157) while Kim posted scores of 82-75 (157). Hayley Geremia, 15, of Port Moody, B.C., came in fourth place (88-80=168).

The Boys 13 and under division was won by Reid Martin, 13, of Washington State, with scores of 78-74 (152). ?This win means a bunch to me because my game is starting to come around ? finally!? said Martin. ?I thought about others in contention because I know that everyone on this Tour can put together good rounds. My strategy was not to try to do too much and to just take what the course and my swing gave me.?

Adam Svensson, 11, of Surrey, B.C., shot 81-77 (158) to finish in second place. Bryan Lichimo, 13, of North Vancouver, placed third (80-79=159) and Matthew Hamilton, 13, of West Vancouver, placed fourth (80-80=160).

Division winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Seon Kim, Jonnie Motomochi, Bryan Lichimo and Hayley Geremia.

The Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition division winners were Martin Lee, 11, of Maple Ridge, Sean O?Connor, 15, of Vancouver, Kevin Stinson, 19, of Mission, and Young Soo (Emily) Kim, 14, of Port Coquitlam.
