ALL FIRST TIME WINNERS AT MAPLE LEAF JUNIOR GOLF TOUR STOP AT LACOMBE

LACOMBE, AB ? The Lacombe Golf Club played host to the Boston Pizza-sponsored Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) this past week, where junior golfers competed in four divisions over the two day event.

The tournament was highlighted by the fact that the division champions were all first-time winners on the MJT, and also by a hole-in-one from 16-year-old Lucas Elke from Edmonton.

Elke shot rounds of 78-81=159 to finish in sixth place in the Boys 14-16 division, which was won by Connor Elekes from Calgary with back-to-back rounds of 73-73 for a 146 total score.

?I made the putts when I had to and made a great putt on the last hole to win,? said Elekes, who beat runner-up Darren Hupfer from Edmonton by one stroke. Hupfer shot 71-76=147.

In third place was Will Porter from Cranbrook, BC (72-77=149). Six strokes back in fourth place was Lewis Chong from Lethbridge (78-77=155).

The top three scores among Boys 17 and up matched those in the Boys 14-16 division. The winner, Brock Crosson from Edmonton, shot 74-72 for a 146 total score to beat runner-up Coogan Mitchell from St. Albert (72-75=147) by one stroke.

?It feels pretty good to win,? said Crosson. ?The keys were my putting ? the five-footers ? and staying patient.?

Carter Lee from Sherwood Park placed third with scores of 74-75=149. Tied for fourth in this division were Kent Wing from Innisfail (81-72=153) and Kyle Morrison from Red Deer (77-76=153).

In the Boys 13 and under division, Nicholas Morelli from Red Deer clinched the title with rounds of 81-75=156 after a tough battle with fellow locals Carson Kallis and Cody Stout, who was the first round leader.

?It?s unbelievable to win,? said Morelli. ?Cody played well but I played shot by shot. I have finally won one. I played safe and smart and allowed everyone else to make mistakes.?

Kallis and Stout tied for second place with rounds of 80-77=157 and 75-82=157 respectively. Jason McKinlay from Consort placed fourth (82-80=162).

The Girls division was won by Margaux Ullett from Calgary with rounds of 83-83 for a 166 total score. ?I started off well and then went with what I had ? it feels great to win,? said Ullett, who has dramatically dropped her handicap since starting playing in MJT and other competitive events about a year ago.

Ullett beat runner-up Anisha Chong from Lethbridge (84-84=168) and Kylie Barros from Edmonton (92-90=182).

Winners of the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition at the event were Ullett, McKinlay, Hupfer and Wing. The Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competition winners were Anisha Chong, Neil Pulongbarit (Edmonton), Cody Adolph (Stony Plain) and Ian Fedun (Edmonton).

The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, formerly the Western Canada Junior Tour, hosts tournaments for boys and girls aged 10 to 23 in four age divisions and is endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart. It is the only major junior tour in Canada run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals.

The next two MJT events in Alberta are at McKenzie Meadows Golf Club in Calgary, August 3-4, and at Stony Plain Golf Club in Stony Plain, August 17-18. Entries are still open for the latter event.
