TOUGHEST COURSE IN MANITOBA HOSTS
BIEBER SECURITIES EVENT ON MAPLE LEAF JUNIOR GOLF TOUR

WINNIPEG, MB. - The Boston Pizza-sponsored Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour held the second tournament in its three-event Manitoba series this past weekend in Starbuck at The Bridges Golf Course, which is arguably one of the toughest in Manitoba.

The two-day tournament was sponsored by local firm Bieber Securities, and featured junior golfers from across the province as well as a few from Ontario.

Michael Goldberg from Winnipeg had the overall low score and captured the Bieber Securities Junior Boys 17 and up division title with his rounds of 72-75=147. ?The short game is key at Bridges (Golf Club),? said Goldberg. ?Chipping it close really helped me at this tight course. It was in great shape both days and the greens were lightning quick. To win a tournament like this one feels great. To know that you gave it your all and it paid off in the end is great.?

Goldberg topped off a quartet of top finishers from Winnipeg in his division: Morgan Campbell placed second with scores of 74-81=155, followed by Chris Metro in third place (86-73=159) and Brendan Young in fourth (84-77=161).

The Boys 14-16 division was won by Jesse Skelton from St. Francois - Xavier, who shot consistent rounds of 76-76=152 to beat Joey McInnes (77-80=157) from Red Lake, ON, by five strokes.

?This is by far the hardest golf course in Manitoba,? stated Skelton. ?There are so many dog-legs and tough tee shots. There really aren?t any easy holes out there. It was in great shape though and the greens were rolling true. I hit all the tight tee shots right down the middle of the fairway and I made a few key six-footers (putts). I feel relieved to win because I struggled at the start of the year but now I am coming in to form.?

Tied for third place behind Skelton and McInnes were Spencer Harris from Winnipeg (84-79=163) and Riley Unger from Plum Coulee (77-86=163).

The Bieber Securities Junior Boys 13 and under title went to Kody Fawcett from Clandeboye, who shot 83-80=163 to edge runner-up Austin Steinberger from East Selkirk (81-83=164) by one stroke.

?The golf course is very hard,? said Fawcett. ?I had to hit an iron off every tee. I hit almost all the fairways and played really good. When Austin (Steinberger) told me he shot 83 in the second round I knew I had clinched the division title. It feels good to win especially when Austin is in the field.?

Third place in the division went to Tanner Harms from Steinbach (87-86=173) and Mike Siwicki from Winnipeg finished fourth (81-94=175).

Kaitlin Troop from Brandon won the Girls division with scores of 85-90=175. ?The golf course was interesting and challenging to play,? said Troop, who also won the Maple Leaf Junior Tour event at Tuxedo Golf Club on Father?s Day weekend. ?I hit my irons well and tried to stay calm when I wasn?t playing well. It feels good to win but I was not overly happy with my performance.?

In second and third place behind Troop were Brittany Piche from Brandon (91-92=183) and Erin Goldberg from Winnipeg (102-111=213).

Division winners of the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition during the tournament were Troop, Skelton, Daniel Moar (Portage la Prairie), and Riley Zihrul (Winnipeg).

The Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competition division winners included Troop, Scott Coubrough (Winnipeg), Chris Krzyszczyk (Winnipeg) and Marcus Hainstock (Stonewall).

The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, formerly the Western Canada Junior Tour, is presented by Boston Pizza and hosts tournaments for boys and girls aged 10 to 23 in four age divisions across Canada. Endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart, it is the only major junior tour in Canada run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals.

The next local Maple Leaf Tour event is the Manitoba PGA Junior Championship presented by Mazda at Transcona Golf Club in Winnipeg, July 25-26.
