PLAYER FROM ANGUS WINS PAID EXEMPTION INTO
MJT ONTARIO PGA JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP AT ANGUS GLEN

Brighton, ON ? It was a big pay day for Wes Stanford this past weekend in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stop at Timber Ridge Golf Club in Brighton.

Stanford, from Angus, Ontario, put together two good rounds of 72-69 for a one-under-par total score of 141 to win the event?s Boys 17 and up division trophy, Callaway prizes and a paid entry into the GOLFWEEK/Sagarin-ranked MJT Ontario PGA Junior Championship at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, July 3-4.

?It was a great feeling to win against some of the top juniors on this Tour,? said Stanford. ?I believe I played very consistent from the tee all the way through to the green.?

Stanford edged runner-up Paul Deuzeman from Cobourg by one stroke. Deuzeman, who qualified for the 52nd annual East Aurora International Junior Masters at the Maple Leaf Tour?s Lionhead Golf Club tournament in May, shot rounds of 69-73 for a 142 total.

Third place went to Dustin James from Lindsay (79-74=153) with Jason Wellings from West Flamborough placing fourth (80-77=157).

The Boys 14-16 champion?s trophy went to Cody Pickard from Thornhill, who shot 73-74 for a 147 total score. ?I countered bad holes with bounceback birdies and an eagle,? said Pickard, ?I was challenged early in the final round by Eric (Velanoff) as we pushed each other to good finishes. It feels great to win ? it builds my confidence and momentum going into the MJT at Angus Glen.?

Eric Velanoff from Waterloo finished in second place with scores of 78-76=154, followed by Pierce Cassidy from Unionville and Alex Willoughby from Chelmsford in third and fourth place respectively.

David Mathers from Kitchener beat Michael Murray from Thornhill to win the Boys 13 and under division with rounds of 88-83 for a 171 total score.

?I didn?t let the frustration get to me,? said Mathers. ?If I had a bad hole I would just get it back on the next hole.?

In the Girls division Tara McFadden from Thomasburg beat Carolyn Halinda from Fonthill by three strokes to win with scores of 92-83=175. ?This golf course was in excellent shape and it is a nice course to play,? said McFadden. ?The lessons I take, warming up beforehand and studying the course before playing helped me win. I am very proud of myself, winning the first MJT event I have ever been in!?

The division winners of the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were David Mathers (228 yds), Cody Pickard (270 yds), Jason Wellings (293 yds) and Carolyn Halinda (224 yds).

Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin division winners were Michael Murray, Cody Pickard, Wes Stanford and Carolyn Halinda.

Participants were treated to instruction on the driving range from Ashley Chinner, two-time Canadian PGA National Champion and Maple Leaf Tour Director. Chinner, who has an accomplished professional tour playing record, also played a few holes alongside each group during the first round, and was pleased to see lower second day scores from most of the competitors.

The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, now in its sixth season, is presented by Boston Pizza and hosts tournaments for boys and girls aged 10 to 23 in four age divisions. The non-profit Tour is endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart and is the only major junior tour in Canada run exclusively by Golf Professionals.

Juniors can still register in the next event, the MJT Ontario PGA Junior Championship at Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, July 3-4. The event is presented by Mazda and is part of a provincial series concept that was originated by the Tour three years ago and is now supported by PGA offices and many golf professionals in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C.
