ABBOTSFORD PLAYERS DOMINATE
MAPLE LEAF JUNIOR TOUR STOP AT LEDGEVIEW

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - The Boston Pizza-sponsored Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stopped this past weekend in Abbotsford for the MJT Fraser Valley Junior at Ledgeview Golf Club.

Ledgeview?s hilly terrain and slick greens in the rainy weather made scoring quite difficult for most of the field, unless you are siblings from Abbotsford. Two brothers, Josh and Nick Taylor, used their home course advantage to dominate their respective age divisions and capture the Boys 17 and up and Boys 14-16 titles respectively.

Josh Taylor, who shared the first round lead with Patrik Ericson of Langley, moved to three strokes clear with an even par final round and a total score of 71-70=141.

?The course was in very good condition in spite of the weather,? said Taylor. ?Consistency was key; I didn?t make many dumb mistakes. It?s gratifying to win.?

Ericson placed second with scores of 71-73=144, followed by Dong Kyu Kim, also of Langley, with rounds of 74-71=145. In fourth spot was Dave Smith of Mission (75-77=152).

Nick Taylor, who had also shared the first round lead with Brett Webster and Ian Mulder ? all from Abbotsford - closed with a 73 and total scores of 74-73=147 to win the Boys 14-16 division.

?I think practice and hard work helped me win this tournament ? my coach and practice were key,? said Taylor. ?It feels awesome to win.?

Alex Wotherspoon of Sammamish, WA, shot 76-73=149 to place second and edge third place finisher Brett Webster (74-76=150) by one stroke. In fourth place was Cody Kwak of Abbotsford (78-74=152).

The Boys 13 and under Champion, Riley Wheeldon of Comox, clinched the victory he deserved after three third place finishes on the Tour already this season. Wheeldon shot 71-78=149 for a three stroke lead over runner-up Kyle Dodman of Abbotsford (75-77=152). In third place behind Dodman was Adam Svensson of Surrey (76-77=153), with Brian Cho of Port Moody in fourth place (75-82=157).

The Girls Division witnessed the two first round leaders, Caroline Kim of Port Coquitlam and Christine Cho of Kent, WA, falling to third and fourth place respectively in the face of hard charges from both Julie Kim of Surrey and Sue Kim of Langley. Julie Kim (78-74=152) and Sue Kim (77-75=152) tied for first place, with the champion?s trophy awarded to Julie Kim based on her best second day score.

?It feels very nice because it is my first win!? said Kim. ?My parents, my coach, my friends helped me win ? and my driving and putting!?

Winners of the Mr. Lube Long Drive and Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competitions respectively were Conrado Paderes of Vancouver and Michael Lionello of Delta for Boys 13 and under; Michael Corboy of Langley and Alex Wotherspoon for Boys 14-16; Josh Logan of Langley and Deryk Mortensen of Port Coquitlam for Boys 17 and up; and Sue Kim and Jisoo Keel of Coquitlam for the Girls.

The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, formerly the Western Canada Junior Tour, hosts tournaments for boys and girls aged 10 to 23 in four age divisions and is endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart. It is the only major junior tour in Canada run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals.

The next local Maple Leaf Tour event is the MJT Junior at Swan-e-set Resort and Country Club in Pitt Meadows, June 12-13.
