MAPLE LEAF JUNIOR GOLF TOUR TO SEND CANADIAN CONTINGENT TO INTERNATIONAL MATCH PLAY IN MEXICO

Edmonton, AB ? The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) held it?s second qualifier for the Canadian contingent in the third annual International Junior Golf Team Matches in Mexico this past weekend, at the Mill Woods Golf Course in Edmonton, AB.

The two-day tournament, which was sponsored by Hygaard Fine Foods, was to qualify at least one player aged 18 or under for a spot on the Maple Leaf Team to the International Junior Golf Team Matches at Los Colinas Golf Club in Cuernavaca, Mexico, this August.

Dallas Bassen from Strathmore captured the Boys 17 and up division title and overall low score for the tournament with rounds of 69-73 for a 142 total score. ?It feels good to win my first tournament of the year,? said Bassen. ?I hit the ball well and my putting was good.?

With Bassen turning 19 just before the International Matches, the automatic exemption defaults to 17-year-old Brett McNallie from Drayton Valley who finished third in the division behind Intermediate Scott Gloge from Calgary. Gloge posted scores of 73-71 (144) and McNallie scored 76-73 for a 149 total.

The winners of the other three divisions in the Hygaard Fine Foods Junior at Mill Woods are also eligible for selection to the Maple Leaf Team of eight (six boys and two girls) with confirmed players to be announced after the final MJT qualifier on June 19-20 at Tuxedo Golf Club in Winnipeg.

Capturing the Boys 14-16 division title was Steven Her from Edmonton, who shot 77-75 (152). ?I tried my best,? Her said, adding that the course and weather conditions were ?never better.?

A three-way tie for second in this division was held by Darren Hupfer from Edmonton (77-78=155), Rhys Royer from Calgary (77-78=155) and Gary Helgason from Edmonton (74-81=155).

The Boys 13 and under division was won by Neil Pulongbarit from Edmonton, who shot 80-76 (156) to beat Carson Kallis from Red Deer (78-80=158) by two strokes. ?I played really well the second round,? said Pulongbarit. ?It feels really great to win ? the prizes are awesome!?

Jason McKinlay from Consort and Kevin Lawrence from Richmond, BC, placed third and fourth respectively.

12-year-old Kylie Barros from Edmonton won the Girls Division with scores of 90-91 (181) over Claire Broshko from Calgary and Casie Cathrea from Livermore, CA. ?I played very steady,? said Barros. ?The greens were great and the weather perfect.?

Division winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Carson Kallis, Gary Helgason, Dallas Bassen and Casie Cathrea.

The Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition division winners were Jason McKinlay, Darren Hupfer, Greg Murphy (Leduc) and Kylie Barros.
