FAWCETT OVERALL CHAMPION AT NORTHERN ONTARIO PGA JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

SUDBURY ? Timberwolf Golf Club in Sudbury lived up to its fine reputation as a great course with hosting both a senior and a junior championship this week: the Canadian PGA Seniors? Championship and the inaugural Northern Ontario PGA Junior Championship.

19-year-old Kevin Fawcett of Newmarket took the overall champion title in the junior event, which was run by the Nationwide Junior Golf Tour and sponsored by Mazda Canada. Fawcett, who won R.E.S.P. monies and a customized TaylorMade driver, said he knew he had clinched it when he tapped in on the 18th hole. ?It feels really good,? he said, ?but I wish I could have played a little more solidly on the front nine today.?

Fawcett shot 72-78 for a 150 total to win the Boys 17 and up division over Ryan Willoughby from Chelmsford (77-75=152) and Jason Wellings from West Flamborough (79-74=153).

Zach Schnurr from Huntsville, who won the Boys 14-16 division title with rounds of 77-74 (151), attributed his win to his iron play and putting throughout the two days. ?I was skeptical (about being able to win) when Kori Paquette fired a 33 on the front side,? said Schnurr, ?however making seven pars helped on the way in.?

Paquette, from London, shot 82-72 (154) and tied for second place with David Sheman from Newmarket (81-73=154).

The Boys 13 and under division was won by Sudbury?s Brennan Doyle, who used his home course advantage to edge Braeden Cryderman from Huntsville by two strokes. Doyle, who shot 76-83 for a 159 total score, said, ?I played one hole and one shot at a time, concentrating on my own game. It came down to the last few holes.?

Cryderman shot 82-79 (161) to place second, and Gajan Sivabalasingham from Markham shot 84-79 (163) to finish third.

The Girls division title went to Natalie Desjardins (81-75=156), who was representing Haileybury Golf Club. Desjardins felt the keys to her victory were putting some pressure on the other players and letting them make the mistakes. ?I knew I had clinched the title when I sank my eagle putt on the last hole,? said Desjardins. ?It feels really good winning a big event like this.?

In second place behind Desjardins was Jen Beattie from Cambridge, who shot 79-81 for a 160 total score. Finishing third was 14-year-old Kathryn Corbiere from M?Chigeeng, with scores of 96-91 (187).

The Sundog Closest-to-the-pin competition was won by Ryan Woodhouse (Kanata), Kyle Gagnon (Chelmsford), Braeden Cryderman and Natalie Desjardins.

The non-profit Nationwide Junior Golf Tour is presented by Boston Pizza and hosts events for boys and girls aged 10 to 23 in four age divisions. The Tour, formerly the Western Canada Junior Golf Tour, held two events in Ontario this season and will be hosting more tournaments in the province in 2004.
