New Minas (Wolfville), NS
Canada’s number one-played junior golf tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), brought another exciting weekend of competition to the East Coast with the MJT KAILANI Series at KenWo Golf Club in New Minas, Nova Scotia, on May 23–24. A total of 83 young athletes teed it up under beautiful sunny skies across two levels of competition, with 12U players competing in the one-day MJT Mini Tour event on May 23 and 19U athletes battling over two days in the MJT Junior Tour stop.
In the MJT Junior Tour event, players received fantastic tee gifting courtesy of series sponsor, KAILANI Outdoors, marking the first of three KAILANI Series stops across the country this season. Up for grabs in six divisions were trophies and an array of prizing including custom Titleist golf bags, with the added stakes of qualifying opportunities in the Golf Canada NextGen Atlantic Championship, the MJT East Coast Junior Championship, and the FCG World Championship.
Wolfville’s Kooper MacKay, 17, carded two great rounds to claim the MJT Junior Boys division title with his scores of 70 and 76 for a 146 total. MacKay shot five birdies across the tournament to secure the victory on home turf at KenWo Golf Club.
The MJT Girls 15-19 division title was captured by Frédérique Doiron, 16, of Dieppe, NB, after she fired rounds of 80 and 79 for a two-day total of 159. Doiron credited her composure throughout the event, saying, “I was able to stay focused on the game,” before rating the tournament experience a ‘10/10, great!’
One of the weekend’s most exciting finishes came in the MJT Juvenile Boys division, where 15-year-old Arlo Anderson of Berwick, NS, edged Carter Lavigne, 16, of Moncton, NB, in a playoff after both players finished tied for the lead at 147. Anderson, who had shot 71 and 76, sealed the title with a par on the second extra hole. Reflecting on the breakthrough victory, Anderson said, “It felt great to win my division this year. I've been playing the MJT tournaments for a few years and this is the first time I was able to put together two good rounds.” Down the stretch, he stayed composed by ‘trying to not think about what my score was or where I was in the standings’ and instead focused on ‘trying to stay locked in.’
Competing in a division all her own, 14-year-old Lila Bishop of Port Williams, NS, put together an impressive performance in the MJT Girls U15 division with rounds of 75 and 71 for a 146 total. Bishop was pleased with both her start to the season and her steady play, saying, “It feels nice to start the season with a win and I am pretty happy with my scores.” She also praised the conditions at KenWo, noting that ‘the course was in great conditions and the weather was perfect.’
Dartmouth’s Holden Urquhart, 14, showcased consistency in the MJT Bantam Boys division, carding matching rounds of 72 to finish at even par for the tournament and the title. Urquhart enjoyed both the competition and atmosphere, saying, “It feels great to win. It was fun to compete with my friends.” He also complimented the course setup, adding, “The course was in great condition, the greens were very fast and rolled great.”
The MJT Peewee Boys division also required extra holes, where 12-year-old Joshua Nickerson of Kentville, NS, defeated Nazzim Rafih, 12, of Wolfville, NS, after both players had tied at the top with a total score of 161. Nickerson, who had fired rounds of 79 and 82, clinched the win on the first playoff hole in the tightly contested battle. “It felt great, very close tournament,” said Nickerson, who also praised the event, rating it ‘10/10’ and adding, ‘Very well run. Thank you MJT.’
