Park fires 65, Jin follows with 66 at MJT KAILANI Series in Troy
Hot temperatures were matched by red-hot scoring at Century Pines Golf Club in Troy, ON, as nearly 90 junior golfers took to the course for the MJT KAILANI Series on August 15–16. The waitlisted field produced a string of exceptional rounds, including scores of 65 and 66, during the second of three national KAILANI Outdoors Series stops on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s #1-played Junior Golf Tour.
With six division titles on the line, players competed for custom MJT trophies, ZEAL sunglasses, and qualifying spots into next month’s MJT National Tour Challenge at Sawmill Golf Course. KAILANI Outdoors added to the weekend experience with fantastic tee gifts for competitors across the field.
Closing out his MJT career, 18-year-old Eric Wen of Waterloo, ON, stole the MJT Junior Boys lead with a sensational three-under 69 in the final round to finish at 139 and earn both the division title and Low Overall honours. Wen carded seven birdies over the weekend and kept his approach simple: “Avoid losing any balls off the tee and try to avoid 3-putts.” With one final MJT win secured before heading back to school, he summed up the event by saying, “It was run really well.”
Minesing, ON’s Chloe Hassberger opened with a one-under 71 and followed with a 74 to claim the MJT Girls 15–19 title by a single stroke at 145. The 16-year-old pointed to an area she has been deliberately developing as the difference-maker: “My mental game. I have been working hard to improve it.” Her shot of the tournament came on the sixth hole, where she put her approach to just two inches from the pin.
A dramatic nine-shot turnaround propelled Weigang Jin to the MJT Juvenile Boys crown, as the 15-year-old from Toronto, ON, followed an opening 75 with a brilliant six-under 66 to close at 141. Jin poured in seven birdies during his final 18 and credited a powerful performance off the tee: “Driving was on point. 300 yards down the middle.” His strategy was equally assertive: “Attack when I can and don’t leave putts short.”
At just 10-years-old, Oakville, ON’s Lanai Park delivered one of the weekend’s standout performances, opening with an impressive seven-under 65 before adding a 75 to secure the MJT Girls U15 title. Park collected nine birdies and an eagle across 36 holes, identifying ‘tracking the wind correctly’ as an important part of her game plan. Asked about her MJT experience, she gave it a “10/10,” adding, “Just keep staying positive!”
William Chen put together two rounds under par to capture the MJT Bantam Boys division, posting a superb 69-70 for a 139 total. The 14-year-old Toronto golfer amassed 12 birdies over the two rounds and highlighted a long-made putt as one of his memorable shots. Chen also had a succinct review of the weekend and series sponsor KAILANI Outdoors: “Good event. Good water bottles.”
Continuing a strong season on the MJT, 12-year-old Jaxon Mitchell of Burlington, ON, secured the MJT Peewee Boys title with rounds of 80 and 77 for a 157 total. Mitchell leaned into an aggressive game plan throughout the weekend ‘to be aggressive’ and delivered one of his biggest highlights on the greens, draining a 32-foot putt for birdie.
