Otter Creek hosts successful MJT qualifier for National Tour Challenge and Australian major

The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada's leading and most-played junior golf circuit, teed it up at Otter Creek Golf Club in Otterville, ON, on June 27-28, where a waitlisted field of more than 70 talented junior golfers aged 19U took part in a two-day MJT stop featuring two major qualifying opportunities. Athletes in six divisions enjoyed beautiful summer weather while competing for custom maple leaf crystal trophies, fantastic prizes, and qualifying spots into the ‘largest junior event in the southern hemisphere’, the Jack Newton International Junior Golf Classic in Australia (shortlist), as well as into the MJT National Tour Challenge in Ontario, both later this fall.

In the MJT Junior Boys division, Eric Wen (18) of Waterloo, ON, surged to the top with a two-under-par 70 in the final round, finishing at 147. Wen made 10 birdies over 36 holes, sticking to his strategy to ‘hit it in play and try to take advantage of the easier holes.’ Following his round, he thanked ‘my parents for supporting me, watching my game, and teaching me golf.’

The MJT Girls 15-19 title went to 16-year-old Lauren Perron of Richmond Hill, ON, whose steady rounds of 79 and 80 added up to a winning score of 159. Perron said her swing coach ‘was a big help making sure I was ready to go,’ while also thanking her parents for getting her to and from the course. Down the stretch, her focus was simple: ‘I tried to stay patient and hit the green.’

Brock Campbell, 16, of Trent Lakes, ON, led the MJT Juvenile Boys division after opening with a one-under-par 71, using that early advantage to finish at 150. Five birdies over the weekend helped his cause, while his focus down the stretch was simple: ‘Swing easy and make pars.’ Campbell also described Otter Creek as an ‘amazing course and well run by all staff.’

In the MJT Girls U15 division, 10-year-old Lanai Park of Oakville, ON, improved by four strokes on day two, following an opening 80 with a 76 to finish at 156. Park said her strategy throughout the weekend was to ‘keep a positive mindset and remember the greens are fast,’ and praised the event afterward, calling the MJT a ‘10/10, keep up the good work!’

The MJT Bantam Boys division saw Bentley McNamara, 14, of Woodstock, ON, put together two consistent rounds of 74 and 75, with six birdies contributing to his 149 total. McNamara thanked his coach, Dave Smallwood, for helping him with both his mental game and swing, adding that his mindset throughout the tournament was to ‘stay positive and hit good golf shots.’

Competing in the MJT Peewee Boys division, 12-year-old Jaxon Mitchell of Burlington, ON, shaved two strokes off his opening round, carding 84 and 82 to finish with a 166 total. Mitchell said his goal for the weekend was simply ‘to have fun and try and play some good golf,’ before describing the MJT tournament as ‘always the best!’
