Petersburg, ON
Waitlisted field of 91 showcase skills in windy MJT Maui Jim Series at Rebel Creek
Very windy conditions greeted a heavily waitlisted field of more than 90 junior golfers at Rebel Creek Golf Club in Petersburg on June 6-7, as the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada's number one-played junior golf tour, continued its record season in Ontario with two-day MJT Maui Jim Series event.
One of six events in the 2026 MJT Maui Jim Series, the tournament featured athletes aged 19 and under competing in six divisions for custom maple leaf crystal trophies, Maui Jim sunglasses, and valuable qualifying spots into the Jack Newton Junior Golf Championship in Australia, the MJT National Tour Challenge, and the MJT East Coast Junior Championship. Adding to the championship atmosphere was outstanding treatment from the Rebel Creek facility, as well as an on-site complimentary ball, wedge and putter education session for the athletes, delivered by Titleist.
A highlight was a one-hole playoff in the MJT Junior Boys division, won by 17-year-old Nathan Wolfkamp of St. Marys, ON, who will be attending Wilfrid Laurier University to play golf after graduation. Wolfkamp emerged victorious due to a birdie on the first extra hole, after finishing regulation tied for the lead at 147 with Luke Readings of London, ON, who is heading south to the USA on a scholarship this Fall. Wolfkamp's two-round total included seven birdies and a closing 72. Following the win, he acknowledged fellow competitors Mason Hamilton and Readings for helping push him throughout the tournament. Wolfkamp said he kept his focus on two things: ‘Playing smart and the meal I'm having after.’
Mississauga's Gracie Vescan edged a tightly packed MJT Girls 15-19 field by a single stroke after firing rounds of 78 and 77 for a winning total of 155. The 16-year-old pointed to her offseason preparation as a key factor in her success, saying, "Over the winter months, I did a lot of work with my coach and have had a great start to my spring season." Vescan also praised the tournament experience, rating it ‘10/10’ and noting the ‘great course and great pace of play.’
In the MJT Juvenile Boys division, 15-year-old Troy Silvester of Maple, ON, surged into first place with a brilliant three-under-par 69 in round two, highlighted by eight birdies over 36 holes. Silvester credited his father, a teaching professional and longtime coach, for helping turn things around after a difficult week. "I had a pretty bad week before this tournament, but on Friday he gave me one tip, my pre-shot routine, which really made my swing," he said. Silvester rated the event a perfect ‘10/10.’
Twelve-year-old Sophia Noh of Richmond Hill, ON, continued her rock-solid season by shooting 76 and 77 (153) to win the MJT Girls U15 title. Noh highlighted the support of her coach and father, saying, "My coach and my dad are always there to help and support me." Her game plan throughout the weekend focused on composure and self-care: "To stay calm during bad shots, eat, and drink water."
A remarkable turnaround powered Hudson Lockwood of Oakville, ON, to victory in the MJT Bantam Boys division. After opening with an 81, the 14-year-old rebounded with a six-birdie, three-under-par 69 in round two, improving by 12 strokes to finish at 150 overall. Lockwood expressed gratitude to the many people who helped him reach the winner's circle, including his brothers, parents, and the MJT team. "A special thank you to the MJT staff for running a great tournament!" he noted.
Caleb Kennedy of Kitchener, ON, delivered two fantastic rounds of par and one-under-par for a division-leading 143 total, running away with the MJT Peewee Boys title. The 12-year-old recorded seven birdies across the weekend and stayed committed to an aggressive mindset from start to finish. His strategy was simple: "Get birdies," and when asked what was on his mind down the stretch, his answer remained unchanged: "Get more birdies." Kennedy also recognized the support of his father and coach throughout the event.
