A successful three-day major event on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s most-played junior golf tour, played out over May 9 through 11 at Flamborough Hills Golf Club in Copetown, ON, namely the MJT Junior Worlds Qualifier presented by Miller Golf. A waitlisted field of 91 juniors teed off in this WAGR-ranked MJT Elite Series event, competing in six divisions for trophies and significant prizing, while benefitting from fantastic gifting from MJT Official Member Gift supplier, Miller Golf.
The talent in the field had to rise to the challenge of cold temperatures, steady winds, and a brief rain delay in round three. They were also competing for valuable qualifying opportunities into the FCG World Championship and the Uswing Mojing Junior World Golf Championship, along with bonus MJT Order of Merit points towards National Championship qualification, raising the stakes in one of the province’s premier events.
Beamsville's Jack Hanna, 18, made his first MJT a memorable one by capturing the MJT Junior Boys title, holding steady across all three days with consistent rounds of 75, 74, and 75 (224) to secure the win in a competitive field. "It feels incredible, considering this event is my MJT debut, so it feels even more rewarding to win. Winning a tournament is hard to do, it feels great," he said, adding, "It was very fun, I enjoyed it! Good first impression."
Hamilton's Regan Andrusyk put together an impressive closing stretch to win the MJT Girls 15–19 division, finishing with rounds of 82, 76, and 72 (230). The 16-year-old said, "It feels great to win my division, as I have been looking forward to this tournament for a while," while noting that 'the course was in great shape (as always), but the weather proved difficult with strong winds and cold temperatures.'
Colton Dee (15) of Kingston surged into the lead in the MJT Juvenile Boys division with a final-round 4-under-par 69, highlighted by 12 birdies overall, finishing at 226 (79-78-69) to win by a single stroke. His strong finish proved the difference in a tightly contested division, as he shared, 'it feels awesome,' adding a rating of '10/10, I had a great time.'
Toronto's Audrina Lau, 14, showed steady improvement carding 88, 86, and 81 (255) over the three rounds to claim the MJT Girls U15 title. "I was happy to improve throughout the tournament and I had fun with the people I played with," she said, adding that down the stretch she was 'just thinking about finishing strong.'
William Chen of Toronto, age 14, battled changing conditions to win the MJT Bantam Boys division with scores of 72, 80, and 71 (223). "First and last day were great, but the second day was really windy. Handled it well," he said, adding, "This event was great."
Atlas Chou (11) of North York secured the MJT Peewee Boys trophy with rounds of 88, 91, and 81 (260). "It feels really good to win the division title," he said, noting that 'the course conditions were pretty good, hard course overall. The weather was decent.'
