Top talent takes on the private Galt Country Club to launch MJT Ontario season

Canada’s leading junior golf tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), teed off the Ontario swing of its 2026 national schedule with the MJT Spring Invitational at the private Galt Country Club in Cambridge on April 25–26. Handpicked from the 2025 MJT Ontario Order of Merit, the restricted-size field played in contrasting conditions with a brisk round one giving way to more forgiving warmth in round two, following weeks of rain and flooding leading into the event.

With talent stacked across five invited divisions, players competed for premium prizing, including ZEAL Optics sunglasses and custom crystal trophies, along with qualifying spots into premier events such as the East Coast Junior Championship, MJT National Tour Challenge, and NextGen Ontario Championship.

Tristan Zhang (17) of Toronto, ON, delivered a dominant performance in the MJT Junior Boys division, firing rounds of 70 and 66 (136) to secure an eight-shot victory. Zhang lit up the leaderboard with 12 birdies over two rounds, posting the tournament’s low score and separating himself from a tightly contested field. “Very exciting first tournament of the season, good start!” he said, reviewing the event as ‘10/10, well organized, nice tee gifts, great staff.’

Seventeen-year-old Sadie Westfall of Oshawa, ON, captured the MJT Girls 15–19 division title with rounds of 75 and 77 (152), earning a two-shot win. Six birdies over the weekend proved pivotal in a competitive field. “It feels like my hard work in the winter paid off and I feel great about my debut into the season,” she shared. “I love and appreciate everything that MJT does for junior golf!”

MJT Juvenile Boys title winner, Justin Chu (16) of North York, ON, claimed the division with consistently strong rounds of 71 and 70 (141). Highlighted by four birdies and an eagle across the two days, Chu set the tone early in the season. “It feels great to win the first tournament of the 2026 season,” he said. “It was a 10/10, extremely well-run event. Always fun to play.”

Grace (HyunYi) Kim (14) of Oakville, ON, claimed the MJT Girls U15 title with scores of 78 and 79 (157), finishing five strokes ahead of the field. Her steady play across both rounds secured a decisive win. “The course condition was amazing considering the weather, the greens were managed nicely and were speedy,” she said. “It feels good to win my division title.”

Thirteen-year-old Max Sue of Markham, ON, surged to victory in the MJT Bantam Boys division with rounds of 75 and an impressive 69 (144). Improving by six strokes in round two, Sue carded five birdies and an eagle to pull away. “The course was good and the weather was good on the second round,” he noted. “I just played my game, not thinking about others.” Sue rated the tournament ‘very good, 10/10.’
