MJT Bieber Classic brings four provinces together at Selkirk Golf and Country Club

The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada's leading and most-played junior golf circuit, continued its record-setting season in Manitoba on June 27-28 with the MJT Bieber Classic / Sergio Garcia Qualifier at Selkirk Golf and Country Club in Selkirk.

Drawing competitors from four provinces, the event showcased the growing depth of junior golf talent across the country as athletes chased national and international opportunities. Nearly 80 talented junior golfers aged 19U competed across six divisions for custom maple leaf crystal trophies, Titleist golf bags, and qualifying opportunities into the Sergio Garcia Junior Championship in Spain (shortlist) and the MJT National Tour Challenge in Ontario later this fall.

In the MJT Junior Boys division, Brayden Boge, 18, of Winnipeg, MB, fired rounds of 76 and 74 for a 150 total. Boge credited his performance to a strong week on the greens, saying, "My putting helped me a lot through the two days," before adding that the MJT is a ‘10/10, love the tour and the people.’

Brooke Henderson, 18, of Portage la Prairie, MB, led the MJT Girls 15-19 division with solid rounds of 83 and 85. Henderson thanked her father, saying, "My dad is someone that always helps me practice, he is a big part in my golf game," and explained her mindset on the home stretch: "I was pretty calm since the back nine was going well for me. I was just making sure to play safe."

A closing one-under-par 70 propelled Darren Hesom (16) of Morden, MB, to the top of the MJT Juvenile Boys division with a 145 total. Hesom mixed five birdies and an eagle over 36 holes and pointed to ‘all the support from my family, friends, and coaches’ for helping him succeed. He also praised the event, calling it ‘well run’ with ‘great prizing.’

Competing in the MJT Girls U15 division, Kate McMillan (14) of East St. Paul, MB, recorded three birdies over the weekend while posting rounds of 88 and 91. McMillan said, "My dad has been a big part in my growth mentally and with my physical shots. He has played the biggest role in my progress," and shared that her focus was ‘just trying to keep my head clear of the result and just finish strong.’

The MJT Bantam Boys division saw Zack Cahill of St. Pierre-Jolys, MB, win the title after shooting rounds of 78 and 77 for a 155 total. The 14-year-old said, "My parents really helped me with keeping my head in the game," and described the tournament simply as a ‘great event they put on.’

Twelve-year-old Tiago Miranda of Winnipeg, MB, finished atop the MJT Peewee Boys division after carding rounds of 77 and 82. Miranda recognized his father for helping him prepare, saying, "My dad helped me prep in the car and figuring out why some things happened." Facing challenging conditions, he added, "Very tough pins and greens out there, I really just tried to focus on making two putts and up and downs."
