Canada's #1 Junior Golf Tour

 

The record MJT season in Manitoba was reinforced this past weekend when another waitlisted field of 89 junior golfers descended on Larters at St. Andrews Golf Course in St. Andrews on June 6-7 as the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada's number one-played junior golf tour, held one its national MJT ZEAL Series events.
 

Athletes aged 19 and under competed across six divisions for custom maple leaf crystal trophies, ZEAL Optics sunglasses, and qualifying opportunities into the Jack Newton Junior Golf Classic in Australia and the MJT National Tour Challenge. The tournament was one of two MJT ZEAL Series events across Canada this past weekend, with the second in Prince Edward Island, highlighting the national reach of Canada's leading junior golf circuit.

A one-stroke margin separated the top two players in the MJT Junior Boys division, where 17-year-old Brady Comaskey of Oakbank, MB, held on for the victory with rounds of 69 and 75. Four birdies across the weekend helped Comaskey finish atop the leaderboard. Reflecting on those who contributed to his success, he said, "My parents have supported me lots and Sean Murray (Coach) has really helped me with my swing." Comaskey also gave the event high marks, rating it ‘10/10’ and praising the pace of play, course conditions, and tournament staff.
 

Winnipeg's Camryn Thomas put together a pair of steady rounds of 79 and 80 to secure the MJT Girls 15-19 title. The 16-year-old pointed to the influence of both her swing coach and mental performance coach, saying, "My coach has helped me a lot with getting my swing dialed. As well, David, with my mental game." Heading into the tournament, Thomas adopted an attacking mindset, explaining that her strategy was to ‘be aggressive and go after pins.’
 

In the MJT Juvenile Boys division, Darren Hesom of Morden, MB, built a strong advantage with an opening-round 71 and never looked back, finishing at 147 after a second-round 76. "Sean Murray helped me develop over the off-season and have early success this year," said Hesom, who also described the tournament as ‘run perfectly’ and a ‘great tournament.’
 

Thirteen-year-old Angelina Sitarz of Winnipeg captured the MJT Girls U15 title with rounds of 72 and 76 for a 148 total. Sitarz acknowledged the impact her coach has had on her development, noting, "My coach has helped me improve my game and my swing." Facing the final hole, she relied on confidence to carry her through, telling herself to ‘feel confident in the last hole and end strong.’
 

Competing in the MJT Bantam Boys division, Ty Montour of Oakville, MB, fired great rounds of 72 and 73 to win the title. The 13-year-old was particularly sharp on the greens, recording six birdies over the 36-hole championship and crediting a hot putter for his success. "I had a great weekend of putting. It felt like every putt I would hit would just go in," said Montour. He also gave high praise to the tournament experience, rating it ‘11/10’ and adding, "Great course, great event, well organized, and a fantastic event for the juniors."
 

Ryan Small of Winnipeg posted solid scores of 73 and 79 to claim top honours in the MJT Peewee Boys division. The 12-year-old's game plan throughout the weekend was straightforward: "Keep it in play." After completing the tournament, Small summed up the experience with a smile, saying simply, "It was fun!"
