Tong fires 5-under to lead wind-tested field at MJT Saskatchewan opener in Estevan
Canada’s leading junior golf tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), launched its Saskatchewan season with the MJT Junior Worlds Qualifier at Estevan Woodlawn Golf Club in Estevan, SK, on May 2–3. A strong field of 80 juniors aged 19U from four provinces teed it up in steady 50-70 km/h winds, adding an extra layer of challenge throughout the weekend.
With talent spread across six divisions, players competed for premium prizing, including crystal trophies, along with qualifying spots into the FCG World Championship, the Uswing Mojing Junior World Golf Championship, and the MJT East Coast Junior Championship, raising the stakes in a highly competitive season opener.
It was a breakthrough moment for Saskatoon’s Griffin Blanch, who captured the MJT Junior Boys title with rounds of 73 and 79 (152). The 18-year-old mixed in four birdies and an eagle over two rounds to secure the win, later reflecting, “Feels good. It’s been a long time coming, I’m happy to finally get it done.” Blanch added a ‘10/10’ rating for the event, noting he always enjoys competing at Estevan Woodlawn.
Saskatoon’s Grace Odnokon delivered steady play across both rounds to claim the MJT Girls 15–19 division title with scores of 81 and 83 (164). The 16-year-old kept it simple in her reaction, calling the win ‘great,’ and rating the tournament experience a perfect ‘10/10.’
Alberta’s Solomon Tong (16) of Heritage Pointe fired an impressive 72-67 (139) to win the MJT Juvenile Boys division, highlighted by a brilliant five-under-par second round. Tong racked up 10 birdies and an eagle over the weekend, crediting his preparation: “It feels refreshing and rewarding to see my winter training pay off, especially in harsh Saskatchewan conditions.” He also praised the event, noting the ‘great service and running of the event.’
Battling tough winds all weekend, 13-year-old Alyxa Melsted of Wynyard showed resilience to take the MJT Girls U15 title with rounds of 86 and 81 (167). “The winds were really high, making it harder to play. But, I finished good,” she added, saying that her focus coming down the stretch was ‘my next shot.’
Consistency in difficult conditions paid off for Melville’s Keaton Kreklewich (14), who carded rounds of 78 and 77 (155) to win the MJT Bantam Boys division. Kreklewich described the challenge as ‘a grind,’ saying, “It feels pretty good. These last two days have been a grind, the wind was tough.” Kreklewich also noted, “I’ve always liked this MJT event.”
Regina’s Hudson Deibert returned to competition in style, winning the MJT Peewee Boys division with rounds of 73 and 78 (151). The 11-year-old kept things simple, noting, “The course was good,” while adding he was ‘glad to be back golfing again.’
