Borggard’s 10-shot turnaround caps National MJT PLYR Series finale at Turner Valley

With summer tournament golf beginning to wind down, nearly 90 talented young athletes had plenty left in the tank as the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) arrived at Turner Valley Golf Club in Diamond Valley, AB, for 36 holes of competition on August 27–28.

Before fall schedules and a return to school take over, the two-day event delivered one more test to close out August, with golfers aged 19 and under battling across six divisions for titles, custom crystal Maple Leaf trophies, and generous PLYR Gift Certificates.

Turner Valley also hosted the sixth and final event in the 2026 national MJT PLYR Series, capping a season-long series that brought PLYR’s support of junior sport to MJT events across Canada.

Calgary’s Owen Borggard saved his best golf for the final round, improving by an impressive 10 strokes with a three-under 69 to steal the MJT Junior Boys title by a single shot. The 18-year-old finished at 148 (79-69), pouring in nine birdies over 36 holes while sticking to a simple strategy: “Be committed to every shot.” Borggard also praised the tournament experience, adding, “This event was run very professionally.”

Fifteen-year-old Brooke Halbauer of Edmonton put together rounds of 78 and 77 for a 155 total, securing both the MJT Girls 15-19 title and Girls Low Overall honours. With the tournament coming down to its closing holes, Halbauer focused on keeping her composure. “I just tried my best to stay calm, especially on the last couple holes,” she said, later adding, “The staff are always so kind and welcoming and run these tournaments well.”

Cohen Bartsch turned an early challenge into a momentum-shifting finish on his way to the MJT Juvenile Boys crown and Boys Low Overall honours. The 15-year-old from Coaldale, AB, followed an opening 75 with an even-par 72 to finish at 147, highlighted by a pivotal eagle on the back nine. “After going 2 over thru 3, I made an eagle putt on 11 to put myself back at even, giving me huge momentum,” said Bartsch. His putting held up remarkably well across both days, as he completed all 36 holes without a single three-putt.

In the two-player MJT Girls U15 field, Calgary’s Hannah Mix posted rounds of 91 and 88 to finish at 179. The 13-year-old pointed to her drive on the 18th as the standout shot of her tournament and described her overall experience at Turner Valley as simply, “It was great.”

Consistent iron and wedge play helped 14-year-old Hudson Lien of Calgary claim the MJT Bantam Boys division with rounds of 78 and 74 for a 152 total. “The strongest part of my game going into the tournament was my approach shots,” said Lien. “I was hitting my wedges and irons consistently.” Reflecting on another tournament with the Tour, he added, “Playing MJT is always great.”

Kolton Phillips brought plenty of firepower to Turner Valley, carding six birdies and an eagle over 36 holes to take the MJT Peewee Boys title. The 12-year-old Calgary golfer signed for rounds of 73 and 75 to finish at 148, with his first-round eagle providing the highlight. “The eagle putt that I made on 16 on the first day,” Phillips said of his standout moment. His verdict on the tournament was equally enthusiastic: “This event was awesome, 10/10. It was really good.”
