Deep field of 117 compete in windy MJT Junior Worlds Qualifier at Wolf Creek
Canada’s leading junior golf tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), continued its 2026 national schedule with the MJT Junior Worlds Qualifier at Wolf Creek Golf Resort in Ponoka, AB, on May 2–3. A waitlisted field of 117 junior athletes aged 19U teed it up across six divisions, with beautiful conditions in round one giving way to challenging, gusty winds in round two.
With season momentum building, players were vying for custom crystal trophies, Titleist golf bags, and valuable qualifying spots into premier events, including the East Coast Junior Championship, Junior America’s Cup (Team Alberta), MJT National Tour Challenge, Golf Canada NextGen Western Championship, and shortlisted positions for the Uswing Mojing Junior World Golf Championship, raising the stakes across the leaderboard.
MJT veteran, Brae Rogalczyk, 18, from Innisfail, led the MJT Junior Boys division with rounds of 70 and 76 (146), mixing in six birdies and an eagle over the weekend to secure the title with a composed two-day performance.
Charlie Duchnij of Airdrie captured the MJT Girls 15–19 title after posting scores of 79 and 80 (159). The 18-year-old reflected on the result, saying, “It feels amazing, I’ve put in a lot of work leading up to this. To see it come together this week is really rewarding.” She added that “It was a great tournament to start my season. The tough conditions were a great test of my game.”
North Battleford’s Shae Maunula earned the MJT Juvenile Boys title with steady rounds of 73 and 77 (150), highlighted by five birdies and an eagle across two rounds. The 16-year-old stayed mentally focused down the stretch, sharing, “I was thinking about the next shot and all of the hours I’ve put in this winter perfecting my game,” and added simply, “The event was great.”
Calgary’s Sedona Weitz battled through the conditions to win the MJT Girls U15 division with scores of 76 and 83 (159). At 13, the victory marked an important step forward, as she noted, “Coming off an injury, I struggled to gain back my confidence - this win boosted it,” while also pointing out the ‘extremely challenging, very high winds.’
Erik Petersen (14) of Okotoks delivered one of the top performances of the tournament, firing back-to-back rounds of 70 (140), each featuring five birdies to finish 1-under par both days and claim the MJT Bantam Boys title in dominant fashion.
A playoff was needed in the MJT Peewee Boys division, where 11-year-old Shane Sky of Foothills edged Calgary’s Wyatt Lazic after both players finished tied at 165. Sky sealed the win on the first extra hole, stating, “It feels great to win my first tournament of the year,” and adding that he knew he needed a birdie on the final hole just to force the playoff.
