National MJT KAILANI Series draws waitlisted field to Golden Eagle Golf Club
The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada's leading and most-played junior golf tour, continued its new national MJT KAILANI Series on June 13-14 at Golden Eagle Golf Club in Pitt Meadows, BC, where a waitlisted field of 90 junior golfers aged 19 and under competed in the second of three stops in the MJT KAILANI series.
Battling across six divisions, athletes competed for titles, custom crystal Maple Leaf trophies, adidas Golf shoes, and qualifying opportunities into the MJT National Tour Challenge this fall in Ontario. Set against the scenic backdrop of Golden Eagle Golf Club, the event showcased the depth of junior golf talent in British Columbia.
West Vancouver's Riley Moore continued his remarkable season, securing his fourth MJT victory of the year in the MJT Junior Boys division with great rounds of 70 and 76 for a 146 total. The 17-year-old credited a fellow competitor for helping him stay confident throughout the tournament, saying, “Alex Irenius, he cheered me on and was very energetic and helped me have confidence to win.” Moore's game plan was clear from the outset: ‘I wanted to hit wedges tight and drop some birdies.’
Fifteen-year-old Michelle Jee of Port Coquitlam posted fine scores of 73 and 78 to earn the MJT Girls 15-19 title at 151. Jee reflected on the support system behind her success, saying, “Without my mom and dad's unconditional support, along with my friends being there to consistently pick me up, I wouldn't be the same athlete I am today.” She also praised the tournament atmosphere, calling it ‘one of the most enjoyable this season’ thanks to the support from staff and friendships formed throughout the weekend.
Jay You of Langley delivered one of the tournament's strongest performances, firing fantastic back-to-back rounds of three-under-par 69 to finish at 138, winning the MJT Juvenile Boys title in style. The 15-year-old credited both his coach and family for helping him reach the winner's circle. “My coach and I worked hard on my game, especially long game, such as driver. Also, I would like to thank my parents who are always supporting me. Without them, this would've never happened.” You also gave the event a perfect rating, citing the ‘wonderful staff and course conditions.’
MJT Girls 15U division winner, Victoria Shen of Surrey, added another trophy to an already impressive campaign, earning her third MJT win of the season with rounds of 72 and 78. At just 12 years old, Shen relied on smart decision-making throughout the weekend, explaining that her approach was to ‘play simple, play safe and smart.’ She also enjoyed the camaraderie of the competition, noting, ‘I had a great group.’
David Chaofan Wu of Richmond won the MJT Bantam Boys title after carding rounds of 76 and 73 for a three-stroke victory. The 12-year-old thanked his grandparents along with MJT tournament director Lee Lee for their support, saying, “My grandparents. And Lee for directing and making this event possible.” On the course, Wu kept things uncomplicated: ‘Play safe for every shot, don't over think.’
Port Moody's Hayden Soohyun Lee’s impressive run continued as he claimed his fifth MJT Peewee Boys title of the season with rounds of 74 and 72 to finish at 146. The 11-year-old expressed gratitude to those who have helped him throughout the year, including his coach, tournament director Lee Lee, his parents, and his brother. Holding a three-shot lead late in the tournament, Lee's focus was straightforward: ‘I really want to make some pars because I was leading by 3.’
