Two playoffs and red-hot soring highlight MJT’s packed FCG World Championship Qualifier at Northview
A heavily waitlisted field of 100 talented junior golfers on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) teed off at the MJT FCG World Golf Championship Qualifier, held March 27–28 on the Canal Course at Northview Golf and Country Club in Surrey, BC. The event marked the first of six premier national stops on the MJT ZEAL Series, showcasing some of the country’s top junior talent where each of the six division winners receives a stylish pair of Zeal sunglasses.
The MJT, Canada’s #1-played junior golf tour, is the exclusive Canadian qualifying tour for the FCG’s World Championship. Players were also competing for exemptions into other premier events, including the International Junior Masters, MJT East Coast Junior Championship, Junior Americas Cup – Team BC, and the NextGen Pacific Championship.
Standout performances were delivered across all six divisions, highlighted by multiple playoffs and red-hot scoring throughout the field.
In the MJT Junior Boys division, Eden Kim, 17, of Coquitlam, BC, delivered a brilliant performance to claim the title, firing rounds of 73 and a career-low, red-hot 65 (138). His impressive 36-hole total was fueled by an incredible 13 birdies, showcasing elite scoring ability against a deep field. “I think overall my putting was really good,” said Kim.
The MJT Girls 15–19 division required an extra hole, where Esther Cheon, 16, of Langley, BC, emerged victorious after a thrilling playoff battle with Surrey’s Sarah Kim, 16, after both players finished tied at 148 (75, 73). Cheon sealed the win with a birdie, capping off a tightly contested division.
One of the most dramatic finishes of the tournament came in the MJT Juvenile Boys division, where Luca Marengo, 16, of Calgary, AB, prevailed in a four-way playoff after all competitors finished tied at 141. Marengo (72, 69) went head-to-head with Jay You, 15, of Langley, BC (74, 67), Tyson Valk, 16, of North Vancouver, BC (72, 69), and Matthew Cui, 15, of Burnaby, BC (68, 73), before clinching the title with a birdie on the first extra hole. “It feels amazing as always,” said Marengo. “It feels good that my game is in a really strong spot coming into the 2026 season.” He added, “The course was great, I could really feel the greens.”
In the MJT Girls U15 division, Quorra Mi, 13, of Burnaby, BC, captured the title with consistent rounds of 73 and 72 (145). “It feels great and I got to play with a lot of my friends,” said Mi, who added, “This event was fun and I love the CWENCH drinks.”
Jackson Wang, 14, of Langley, BC, earned the MJT Bantam Boys title with back-to-back under-par rounds of 69 and 70 (139), highlighted by eight birdies and one eagle. “It feels great winning this event, it’s my first MJT win this year,” said Wang. “The weather was awesome and the Directors of the tournament were very nice and made the tournament possible.”
Rounding out the winners, Remy Meng, 11, of Burnaby, BC, claimed the MJT Peewee Boys division title with rounds of 73 and 76 (149), marking his first win at the Junior Tour level. “I was really happy and proud of myself. It is my first time winning an MJT Junior event,” said Meng. “Before putting, I had a lot of pressure, and after, I was really happy.”
