MJT Mini Tour at Scarlett Woods sparks junior golf action ahead of Canada Day
A beautiful summer day set the scene at one of Toronto’s busiest municipal tracks as the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s leading junior circuit, brought its Mini Tour to the executive-length Scarlett Woods Golf Course on June 29. A waitlisted field of talented 12U athletes competed across six divisions, all chasing division titles and qualifying spots for the MJT Mini Tour National Championship in British Columbia later this summer.
The day delivered some sterling performances, with division wins seen by Eric Kim, 12, of Toronto, ON, in MJT Boys 11-12 (68), Brinley Lau, 11, of Toronto, ON, in MJT Girls 11-12 (74), Rylan Chan, 9, from Markham, ON, in MJT Boys 9-10 (74), Lanai Park, 9, from Oakville, ON, in MJT Girls 9-10 (71), Logan Metzen, 8, of Etobicoke, ON, in MJT Boys 8U (68), and Olivia Tu, 8, of Markham, ON, in MJT Girls 8U (86).

Twelve-year-old Eric Kim of Toronto, ON, fired a stellar round of 68 to capture the MJT Boys 11–12 title by a single shot. “It feels great to win after not doing so well in the past,” he said. “You feel like you’re about to hover from the ground.” Kim added that his favourite part of MJT is ‘making friends and competing with skilled players.’

Toronto’s Brinley Lau, age 11, carded a great round of 74 to take the MJT Girls 11–12 division. “It feels good to know that all my hard work is paying off,” she shared, adding, “My favourite part about competing on the MJT is all of the competition and meeting new people.”

Nine-year-old Rylan Chan of Markham, ON, kept his nerves in check down the stretch, posting a 74 to win the MJT Boys 9–10 division. “I was nervous and didn’t want a bogey,” he said. “It is fun and exciting (to win)!”

Oakville’s Lanai Park, 9, remained unstoppable this season, carding a brilliant round of 71 to win again in the MJT Girls 9–10 division, her third straight title. “I got to play well!” she said. “It is competitive and fun! Thank you for this tournament and keep up the good work!”

Etobicoke’s Logan Metzen, 8 years old, bounced back from recent swing struggles to shoot a remarkable 68 and win the MJT Boys 8U title. “It felt amazing to win this,” he said. “I like that you play 18 holes, it gives you more chances to make birdies and you get more fun.”

Olivia Tu, 8, of Markham, ON, captured the MJT Girls 8U division with a score of 86. When asked how it felt to win, she simply replied, “Excellent!” Her focus during the round? “Stay calm and get your breath back.”

About the MJT: The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is Canada’s #1 Junior Golf Tour as well as the only national junior tour run exclusively by PGA of Canada Professionals and the ‘Road to College Golf’ in Canada.
