Opening ace and a sizzling 64 highlight MJT Mini Tour’s Alberta opener in Sylvan Lake
Canada’s number one-played junior golf tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), teed off the 2025 Alberta season for the 12U Mini Tour at Meadowlands Golf Club in Sylvan Lake on May 3, drawing a full field of talented golfers. This major qualifying event marked the first stop for Alberta’s youngest rising stars, with division titles and four coveted international qualifying spots on the line. The MJT continues to lead the junior golf landscape, with full and wait-listed fields offering unmatched competition and international pathways for young Canadians coast-to-coast.
Players in the Meadowlands stop had the opportunity to advance to some of the most prestigious junior golf events in the world, including the FCG Callaway World Championship, Uswing Mojing Junior World Championship, the World Stars Junior Championship and MJT Mini Tour National Championship.
A fantastic highlight was an opening hole-in-one, made in the MJT Girls 9–10 division by 10-year-old Mia He of Edmonton, AB, who stepped up and aced the very first hole of her season. Girls continued to make the news at the event, as a dazzling 8-under-par 64 was recorded by Sedona Weitz, 12, of Foothills M.D., AB, sealing her claim to MJT Mini Tour fame in the MJT Girls 11–12 division.
Other standout performances led to victory for Judah Hornstein, 12 of Calgary, AB, in MJT Boys 11-12 (82), Rylan Hryhirchuck, 10, from Irma, AB, in MJT Boys 9-10 (69), Annabel Zhao, 9, from Richmond, BC, in MJT Girls 9-10 (67), Jordy Bain, 8, of Edmonton, AB, in MJT Boys 8U (73), and Ella Chan, 8, from Edmonton, AB, in MJT Girls 8U (110).

In the MJT Boys 11–12 division, 12-year-old Judah Hornstein of Calgary, AB, claimed the title with a solid round of 82. Hornstein credited his offseason preparation, saying, “I hit balls all winter and practiced all of my short game.” With his sights set on qualifying for Nationals, he’s aiming to build consistency with every round.

Twelve-year-old Sedona Weitz of Foothills M.D., AB, turned in a spectacular performance, firing an 8-under-par 64 with four birdies and two eagles to take the MJT Girls 11-12 title in dominant fashion. Weitz credited her preparation to ‘practicing almost every day and doing all of my golf exercises,’ and shared her season goals: “Play very well, be kind, and get a hole-in-one.”

Rylan Hryhirchuk, 10, of Irma, AB, edged out the competition with a sharp round of 69 to win the MJT Boys 9–10 division by a single stroke. His round featured an impressive seven birdies, showcasing both consistency and confidence. “Like any good Canadian, I played hockey to stay in shape and practiced at home in the simulator,” said Hryhirchuk about his off-season, adding he's aiming to ‘go to Nationals and place top 10’ this season.

Nine-year-old Annabel Zhao of Richmond, BC, made the trip to the tournament worth her while by recording a stellar round of 5-under-par 67, winning the MJT Girls 9–10 division in style. Zhao’s strong play and composure stood out as she set the pace in her division. Her goals for the season reflect both focus and fun: “Try my best to get every round under-par, enjoy each MJT tournament, and make friends.”

Jordy Bain, an 8-year-old from Edmonton, AB, fired a strong round of 73 with five birdies to capture the MJT Boys 8U division title. Bain credited his preparation to time spent golfing in Phoenix at his grandparents’ place and sharpening his game with virtual golf at home. He rated the tournament a ‘10/10 — always a wonderful event,’ and added with a smile: “Great job with the weather compared to this weekend last year!”

Ella Chan, 8, of Edmonton, AB, came out to participate in the MJT Girls 8U division and fired a score of 110. Competing solo didn’t stop her from setting big (and playful) goals, such as ‘to beat my sister.’ Chan rated the event a ‘10/10,’ capping off a great start to her season with a strong showing and a great attitude.
