MJT PLYR Series heats up in Toronto with back-to-back playoffs at Don Valley
The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) brought its national PLYR Series to Don Valley Golf Course in Toronto, ON, June 14–15, drawing a full field of 90 junior golfers which had a waitlist nearly 20 players deep. As one of six premier events in the MJT’s partnership with PLYR Golf, the tournament featured high-level competition across six age divisions, with qualifying spots on the line for the East Coast Junior,
Jack Newton Junior Golf (JNJG) International Junior Classic in Australia, MJT National Tour Challenge, and Golf Canada’s NextGen Quebec Championship.
A pair of thrilling playoffs capped off the MJT PLYR Series at Don Valley in both the Junior and Peewee Boys divisions. In the Junior Boys division, 18-year-olds Jaiden Brown of Newcastle, ON, and Ed Friesen of Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON, battled through three extra holes after tying for the lead with a total score of 151. Brown prevailed to claim the title. In the Peewee Boys division, 12-year-olds Ivan Xue of Toronto, ON, and Michael Li of Richmond Hill, ON, finished tied at the top with a total score of 158, forcing a playoff of their own. Xue secured the win with a clutch 18 foot birdie on the first extra hole.
Additional impressive performances resulted in division wins for Sadie Westfall, 16, of Oshawa, ON, in MJT Girls 15-19 (78-81=159), Karuna Doulat, 15, of Brampton, ON, in MJT Juvenile Boys (74-78=152), Grace (HyunYi) Kim, 13, from Oakville, ON, in MJT Girls U15 (78-74=152), and Nathan Dai, 14, from North York, ON, in MJT Bantam Boys (76-79=155).

Jaiden Brown, 18, of Newcastle, ON, captured the MJT PLYR Series Junior Boys division title in thrilling fashion, outlasting Ed Friesen, also 18, from Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON, in a three-hole playoff after both players finished tied at the top in a field packed with top-tier talent. “I’m glad to win this tournament back-to-back years,” said Brown, who credited the atmosphere for elevating the experience. “My favourite part about MJT events are the support and representatives, it’s always nice to see them.”

Oshawa’s Sadie Westfall, 16, delivered a steady performance to claim the MJT PLYR Series Girls 15–19 division title with rounds of 78 and 81 (159), highlighted by three birdies. Her consistency over two days set her apart from the field by a four-stroke margin. “It feels good and as if hard work is paying off,” said Westfall. “It also allows me to have a good idea of where I stand early in the season and how I can go about improving my game.” She added that her favourite part of the MJT is ‘how it helps me perfect and polish off my game and advance my tournament play.’ She added, “The structure and format of the events is also great, as well as the wonderful people.”

Brampton’s Karuna Doulat edged out the competition by a single stroke to win the MJT PLYR Series Juvenile Boys division with rounds of 74 and 78 (152). The 15-year-old sealed the deal with a clutch birdie on the final hole. “Coming down the stretch, I knew Zach was closing in on me,” said Doulat, “so I knew I just had to stick to my routine and trust myself all the way to the end. Making that birdie on 18 was huge.” He added that he enjoys competing in MJT events because ‘they’re so well organized, straightforward and just really well run tournaments.’

Grace (HyunYi) Kim, 13, of Oakville, ON, delivered rounds of 78 and 74 (152) to top the MJT PLYR Series Girls U15 division, highlighted by four birdies over the weekend. “It feels good to win this tournament because I can tell how much improvement I have made since last year,” said Kim, who also praised the overall experience. “My favourite reason would be great prizes and great community!”

In a tight battle in the MJT PLYR Series Bantam Boys division, 14-year-old Nathan Dai of North York, ON, emerged victorious by a single stroke after carding rounds of 76 and 79 (155). Dai notched five birdies en route to the win in a highly competitive field, showcasing poise and consistency across both days.

Twelve-year-old Ivan Xue of Toronto, ON, emerged victorious in the MJT PLYR Series Peewee Boys division after a thrilling playoff finish. Xue and fellow 12-year-old Michael Li of Richmond Hill, ON, were tied at 158 after two rounds, forcing an extra hole where Xue drained an 18-foot birdie putt to seal the win. “It feels pretty nice, it was kind of hard winning because I was two down against one of my competitors coming into today’s round,” said Xue. “It’s a really fun event, I get to play against a lot of really good competitors like Michael Li and Nathan He.”
