Pufahl’s ace and back-to-back playoffs headline MJT adidas Series at St. Boniface
A wait listed field of 72 junior golfers teed it up at St. Boniface Golf Club over the May long weekend, May 18-19, for the MJT adidas Golf Series, one of six adidas-sponsored stops on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s leading junior golf tour.
Set against the scenic, tree-lined fairways of one of Manitoba’s premier courses, athletes competed for six division titles, along with qualifying and shortlist exemptions for the East Coast Junior Championship in New Brunswick, the Jack Newton Junior Golf (JNJG) International Junior Classic in Australia, and the MJT National Tour Challenge in Ontario. Players also took home fantastic gifts and prizing from adidas Golf, adding to the prestige and excitement of the event.
Ryder Pufahl, 16, of East St. Paul, MB, delivered one of the weekend’s standout moments with a spectacular hole-in-one on hole 5 during round one, and finished a respectable 5th in the MJT Juvenile Boys division.
The excitement didn’t stop there; two divisions went to playoffs to decide winners. Brayden Boge, 17, of Winnipeg, MB, outlasted Liam Comaskey, 18, of Oakbank, MB, in a four-hole playoff, after both had tied for the lead with a score of 149, winning Boge the MJT Junior Boys title. In another tight battle, Darren Hesom, 15, of Morden, MB, edged Ethan Bayluk, 15, of East St. Paul, MB, in a one-hole playoff in the MJT Juvenile Boys division, after both finished tied at the top with a score of 160.
Brooke Henderson, 17, from Portage La Prairie, MB, came out to compete in the MJT Girls 15-19 division and won the low overall Girls score, (92, 102=194). Other strong performances across the field resulted in division titles for Owen Conrad, 14, of Winnipeg, MB, in MJT Bantam Boys (75, 79=154), Payton Chapman, 14, of Winnipeg, MB, in MJT Girls U15 (88, 107=195), and Tiago Miranda, 11, of Winnipeg, MB, in MJT Peewee Boys (85, 90=175).

Brayden Boge, 17, of Winnipeg, MB, came out on top in a thrilling four-hole playoff to win the MJT Junior Boys division, edging out Liam Comaskey, 18, of Oakbank, MB, after both finished tied at 149. Boge carded five birdies over two rounds and credited his steady tee game for the win: “I hit almost every fairway.” A composed performance under pressure earned him the division title in a playoff victory.

Darren Hesom, 15, of Morden, MB, secured the MJT Juvenile Boys title in dramatic fashion, winning a one-hole playoff over Ethan Bayluk, 15, of East St. Paul, MB, after both finished tied at 160. Hesom fired two consistent rounds of 80-80 and was thrilled with the early-season breakthrough: “It feels great, I can’t even express it. This is only my second event, and to win this early in my MJT career shows my hard work pays off.”

Seventeen-year-old Brooke Henderson of Portage La Prairie, MB, put together rounds of 92 and 102 (194) in the MJT Girls 15-19 division, earning Low Overall honours for the girls. Henderson showed up ready to compete and put in a solid effort across both rounds.

Payton Chapman, a 14-year-old of Winnipeg, MB, captured the MJT Girls U15 title with rounds of 88 and 107 (195). Her strong performance in round one set the pace and proved enough to secure the win in her division.

Winnipeg’s Owen Conrad put together rounds of 75 and 79 (154) to take the MJT Bantam Boys title, delivering a steady performance across both days. The 14-year-old is building momentum this season, sharing, “(The win) feels great, my confidence is definitely going to be better moving forward.” Conrad called the tournament a ‘great event’.

Winnipeg’s Tiago Miranda posted rounds of 85 and 90 (175) to win the MJT Peewee Boys title, marking a meaningful return to the winner’s circle. The 11-year-old stated, “It feels awesome, I haven’t won in two years. It’s also my second year on the MJT Junior Tour.” When asked who he’d most like to play a round with, Miranda didn’t hesitate: “100% it would be Rory McIlroy because I’ve always looked up to him.”
