Canada's #1 Junior Golf Tour

 

It was a record-setting ending to the successful Saskatchewan season on Canada’s leading Junior Golf Tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), with a waitlisted field of 132 athletes competing in the two-day MJT Order of Merit Series at The Legends Golf Club in Warman, SK, over August 23-24. An ace, low scores and sibling victories were some of the many highlights experienced, as players battled for titles, coveted crystal trophies, and valuable Order of Merit points in the race to qualify for the 27th annual MJT National Championship presented by adidas Golf at Orange Lake Resort in Florida this November.

 

Known for its challenging layout and wide prairie fairways, The Legends provided a fitting stage for the tournament. A spectacular hole-in-one was made by Saskatoon’s Ryder Bourassa, 14, on the 17th hole, on day two, in the MJT Bantam Boys division. The excitement continued with a sibling sweep by Regina’s Yuna and Jun Lee, who both captured their respective division titles. Yuna, 15, topped the leaderboard in MJT Girls 15-19 with rounds of 86-82 (168), while Jun, 12, fired under-par rounds of 71-70 (141) to win the MJT Bantam Boys division.

Standout scores of back-to-back 69’s by 17-year-old Brady Guenther of Saskatoon, SK, shot him up to the top of the MJT Junior Boys division where his six-under par 138 total earned a commanding victory. More fine performances which resulted in division wins were recorded by Youran (Yoyo) Zhu, 14, from Saskatoon, SK, in MJT Girls U15 (79-80=159), and Hudson Deibert, 10, from Regina, SK, in MJT Peewee Boys (76-72=148).

In the MJT Junior Boys division, Saskatoon’s Brady Guenther, 17, closed out the season in style with back-to-back 69s for a six-under total of 138, highlighted by 10 birdies. “It feels good to win and end the season with a win,” he said, adding, “My favourite part about competing on the MJT is how friendly all the staff and players are.”

The MJT Girls 15-19 title was won convincingly by Yuna Lee, 15, of Regina, SK, who shot rounds of 86 and 82 (168). “I feel like my hard work has paid off and that it was all worth it,” she shared, noting that her favourite part is ‘I get to meet new players and show off my skills.’

In the MJT Juvenile Boys division, 16-year-old Kai Kriekle of Regina, SK, bounced back after a tough previous week to win with solid scores of 75 and 70 (145), including seven birdies. “It feels amazing after not playing the best the week prior,” he said, also praising the event as ‘an amazing tournament with a great job by Jeff and team.’

The MJT Girls U15 title was captured by Youran (Yoyo) Zhu, a 14-year-old from Saskatoon, SK, who capped her season with rounds of 79 and 80 (159). “It feels amazing, especially since it’s the last tournament of the year. It’s a good way to end off the season and prepare for the next one,” she said. “Everyone is super nice. The staff is super helpful and supportive, it’s like everyone in the tournament is family.”

Claiming the MJT Bantam Boys division title was Jun Lee, 12, of Regina, SK, who fired two under-par rounds of 71 and 70 (141), with seven birdies in total, to win by five strokes. “It feels great to end the season off with a win,” he commented, adding his mindset down the stretch was to ‘stay calm, don’t get too confident and just play my game.’

The MJT Peewee Boys title went to Hudson Deibert, 10, of Regina, SK, after he shot rock solid rounds of 76 and 72 (148) to finish his season in style. “It felt good to win,” he said, adding that his favourite part about competing on the MJT is ‘meeting new friends.’
