Clutch birdie playoff win for Braithwaite highlights MJT Zeal Series at Mill Woods

 
Canada’s leading junior golf tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), hosted a waitlisted field of 85 talented athletes in the two-day MJT Zeal Series on the tree-lined fairways and challenging layout of Mill Woods Golf Club in Edmonton, AB, on August 25-26. Competitors went head-to-head in the hot weather for division titles, crystal trophies, stylish Zeal Optics prizing, and valuable Order of Merit points towards qualifying for the 27th annual MJT National Championship presented by adidas Golf at Orange Lake Resort in Florida this November. This popular stop also marked the final event in the 2025 MJT Zeal Series, capping off a season of five National events sponsored by Zeal Optics.

Talent was on full display, with standout performances across the board. Claiming Low Overall Boy Honours was Nicholas Janmohamed, 19, from Edmonton, AB, winner of MJT Junior Boys, who fired fantastic under-par rounds of 71-70 (141). Low Overall Girl Honours went to 13-year-old Camilla Ruesga from Calgary, AB, winner of MJT Girls U15, after she fired great back-to-back rounds of 74 for a 148 total score. 
 
The MJT Juvenile Boys division came down to a thrilling playoff after Edmonton’s Gavin Braithwaite, 16, (73-72) and Fort Saskatchewan’s Harrison Kiziak, 16, (75-70) finished tied for the lead at 145 after 36 holes. Braithwaite sealed the victory on the second extra hole with a clutch birdie. 
 
More great scoring led to first place podium finishes for Shylee Kostiuk, 15, of Spruce Grove, AB, in MJT Girls 15-19 (74-79=153) and Jacob Natomagan, 14, of Sylvan Lake, AB, in MJT Bantam Boys (77-73=150).

Edmonton’s Nicholas Janmohamed, 19, took home the MJT Junior Boys title after firing fantastic under-par rounds of 71 and 70 (141) for a three-under-par total. “It feels amazing, it feels like I put in the work all summer and it finally paid off. I have been struggling as of late, so it’s nice to see it all come together,” said Janmohamed. His favourite part about the MJT? “The great people you get to meet and the course the events are held at. The MJT does an incredible job and their whole team is great.”

In the MJT Girls 15-19 division, Spruce Grove’s 15-year-old Shylee Kostiuk successfully battled through the heat to fire rounds of 74 and 79 (153), capturing the title. “It feels awesome, especially in the very hot conditions,” she shared, while commenting on the MJT: “It’s a great organization.”

The MJT Juvenile Boys title was decided in dramatic fashion, with Edmonton’s Gavin Braithwaite, 16, defeating Fort Saskatchewan’s Harrison Kiziak, 16, on the second playoff hole after both finished tied at 145 through 36 holes. Braithwaite secured the title with a clutch birdie. “(It feels) good. I finished top three a couple of times, so this is great,” he said following the win, adding that his favourite part about competing on the MJT is ‘the competition.’

Calgary’s Camilla Ruesga, 13, won the MJT Girls U15 title in style with two great back-to-back rounds of 74 (148). “To win this tournament, it makes me feel very happy,” she said. “My favourite part was playing with my friend, Belanna.”

In the MJT Bantam Boys division, Sylvan Lake’s 14-year-old Jacob Natomagan improved his score by four strokes in round two, closing with 77 and 73 (150) to win the title, carding five birdies along the way. “It feels awesome to finally close one out this year,” he said. Reflecting on his approach, Natomagan added, “Coming down the stretch, I was trying to keep it simple and aiming at the centre of the green to give myself opportunity at birdie.” His favourite part about competing on the MJT? “The competition against other awesome golfers from around Western Canada and getting to travel and play golf in some nice areas around the country.”
