Nicholson clutches playoff victory in MJT PLYR Series at Turner Valley

 
Set against the rolling terrain of Turner Valley Golf Club in Diamond Valley, Alberta, the number one- played junior golf tour in Canada delivered another marquee event with the MJT PLYR Series on July 3–4. PLYR Golf is a valued MJT partner, sponsor of the National Closest to the Pin competition at every MJT event nationwide, and title sponsor of six premier PLYR Series tournaments across the country. This particular stop drew over 90 of the region’s top 19U athletes, all competing for division titles, along with the chance to qualify for MJT Team Canada to the JNJG International Junior Classic  in Australia and the MJT National Tour Challenge in Ontario.

Eighteen-year-old Edie Nicholson of Calgary, AB, emerged victorious in the MJT Girls 15–19 division at Turner Valley, winning a playoff against fellow Calgarian Kyra Tovee, after both players had tied for the lead with a total score of 164. Nicholson sealed the deal with a clutch performance on the first extra hole.

Additional division titles were on in fine style by Zach Lehmann, 18, of Calgary, AB, in MJT Junior Boys (73-72=145), Jeevin Dhaliwal, 15, of Calgary, AB, in MJT Juvenile Boys (72-75=147), Grace Jordan, 14, from Calgary, AB, in MJT Girls U15 (91-80=171), Mason Kuryvial, 14, from Taber, AB, in MJT Bantam Boys (76-75=151), and Niko Tran, 12, of Calgary, AB, in MJT Peewee Boys (77-84=161).

Eighteen-year-old Zach Lehmann of Calgary, AB, dominated the MJT Junior Boys division, carding rounds of 73 and 72 (145) with six birdies to earn a commanding seven-shot victory over a three-way tie for second. “It felt very good to win,” said Lehmann. When asked about the tournament experience, he kept it simple: “Loved it.”

In a thrilling finish, Calgary’s Edie Nicholson, 18, edged out fellow Calgarian Kyra Tovee, 17, in a playoff to win the MJT Girls 15–19 division after both tied at 164 over two rounds. Nicholson clinched the title with a par on the first extra hole. “Good! It was super close with a playoff hole,” she said. “I managed to par it and take the win.” Her favourite part of the MJT? “Meeting new people and the good competition.”

Jeevin Dhaliwal, 15, from Calgary, AB, put together rounds of 72 and 75 (147) with an impressive seven birdies to claim the MJT Juvenile Boys title. “Feels good, but I still feel like I left a lot of shots out there,” said Dhaliwal, who praised the tour for its ‘good competition on great courses’ and called it a ‘very well-run event.’

Grace Jordan of Calgary, AB, bounced back from a tough opening round to shoot 11 strokes better on day two to capture the MJT Girls U15 title. The 14-year-old shared, “It feels good, especially to come back from a bad round.” Her focus coming down the stretch? “I was just hoping to par it and to keep doing my best.”

Fourteen-year-old Mason Kuryvial of Taber, AB, took top honours in the MJT Bantam Boys division, edging out the field by a single stroke with scores of 76 and 75 (151). “It feels good to win this tournament, seeing all my hard work pay off,” said Kuryvial. “I enjoy competing on the MJT because it allows me to play the sport I love at a high level against other really good kids.”

With rounds of 77 and 84 for a 161 total, 12-year-old Niko Tran of Calgary, AB, won the MJT Peewee Boys division by a single stroke. “Great,” he said, when asked how the win felt. As for his favourite part of the MJT? “The staff and how the tournaments are run.”
