Packed field and clutch playoff finish highlight rainy MJT NAX Classic in Stony Plain

 
A heavily waitlisted field of 85 junior golfers on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), Canada’s leading junior circuit, congregated in Stony Plain, AB, for the MJT Northern Alberta Xtreme Classic at Stony Plain Golf Course, June 14–15, 2025. Round one tested players on the challenging course with cool temperatures and steady rain, while round two brought some much-needed reprieve and strong scoring. The title sponsor, Northern Alberta Xtreme (NAX), reinforced their support of junior athlete development with their sponsorship of this tournament, where grit, resilience, and talent was displayed across six divisions.

In the MJT Bantam Boys division, 14-year-old Landyn Reid of Fort McMurray, AB, and 13-year-old Erik Petersen of Okotoks, AB, found themselves locked in a tie with a total score of 154 after two rounds, forcing a playoff. Reid wasted no time, draining a clutch birdie on the first extra hole to capture the division title in dramatic fashion.
 
Low Overall Honours for boys and girls respectively were claimed by Kade Trefanenko, 16, of Spruce Grove, AB, in MJT Junior Boys (69-73=142) and Shylee Kostiuk, 15, of Spruce Grove, AB, in MJT Girls 15-19 (75-78=153). Other strong performances leading to division wins were recorded by Ryan Johnson, 16, from Calgary, AB, in MJT Juvenile Boys (75-72=147), Danika Horcica, 13, from Edmonton, AB, in MJT Girls U15 (80-79=159), Shane Sky, 10, from Foothills, AB, in MJT Peewee Boys (81-78=159).

With a sizzling 69 in round one, followed by a 73 in round two, 16-year-old Kade Trefanenko of Spruce Grove, AB, locked up the MJT Junior Boys division title at 142 total score with nine birdies. “It feels like something that was long overdue, and it feels really good,” said Trefanenko, who added that his focus coming down the stretch was simple: “Just thinking about the next shot and not worrying about the overall result, just the present.”

In the MJT Girls 15–19 division, 15-year-old Shylee Kostiuk of Spruce Grove, AB, took top honours with rounds of 75 and 78 (153) and four birdies. “It feels great to win, I really like playing this course,” she said. ‘Meeting friends and playing with them’ was the highlight of her MJT experience.

Sixteen-year-old Ryan Johnson of Calgary, AB, fired rounds of 75 and 72 (147) with six birdies to take home the MJT Juvenile Boys division title. “It feels awesome to win and see all of my hard work pay off!” he shared. Johnson also highlighted ‘the atmosphere, the competition, and everyone that makes each event memorable’ as his top reasons for competing on the MJT.

Danika Horcica, 13, of Edmonton, AB, recorded scores of 80 and 79 (159), highlighted by four birdies, to win the MJT Girls U15 division. “It feels good to win this tournament and I really enjoyed meeting new girls this weekend,” said Horcica. “MJT always runs awesome events at really nice venues,” she added.

Landyn Reid, 14, of Fort McMurray, AB, clinched his first-ever MJT title in dramatic fashion, draining a birdie on the first playoff hole to edge 13-year-old Erik Petersen of Okotoks, AB, after both players tied at 154. “It felt really good when I made my birdie, and in my first MJT tournament too,” said Reid, who noted that his favourite part was ‘meeting new people and playing different courses.’

Ten-year-old Shane Sky of Foothills, AB, showed poise and progress with rounds of 81 and 78 (159), including three birdies, to top the MJT Peewee Boys division. “It is always fun to play tournaments. I always look to improve,” said Sky, who also emphasized ‘staying in the moment and having fun’ as his mindset throughout the event.
