McAbee and You drive off with Low Overall titles at MJT Ford Series in Chilliwack
Another successful MJT Ford Series event played out on Canada’s leading competitive junior circuit, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), on September 27 and 28, this time at Chilliwack Golf and Country Club in Chilliwack, BC. On the club’s classic parkland layout framed by mountain views, a wait-listed field competed across six divisions for titles and exceptional prizing, highlighted by the chance to win a brand-new Ford Escape from Chilliwack Ford via the MJT Ford Hole-in-One Contest.
Solid gameplay resulted in Boys and Girls Low Overall Honours* going to Jay You, 15, of Langley, BC, winner of MJT Juvenile Boys, who fired two impressive rounds for an excellent score of 138 (71-67) and Avery McAbee, 12, of Mission, BC, winner of MJT Girls U15, who carded strong back-to-back rounds of 74 for a total score of 148. Additional impressive performances resulted in division titles being awarded to James C.R. Qiu, 13, from Surrey, BC, who dominated the MJT Peewee Boys division with brilliant rounds of 67-69 (136), Haarjun Lotay, 14, from Burnaby, BC, in MJT Bantam Boys, who shot great scores of 70-73 (143), Max Hager, 19, from Kelowna, BC, who closed out his junior career with a win in MJT Junior Boys after firing 75-73 (148), and Claire Chun, 16, from Coquitlam, BC, in MJT Girls 15-19, who carded 99-95 (194) to win in her inaugural season.

Kelowna’s Max Hager, 19, closed out his MJT career in style, winning the MJT Junior Boys title with rounds of 75–73 (148), highlighted by nine birdies. “It feels great to win. Coming in knowing this is my last MJT that I will play makes this mean so much more,” said Hager, who added his favourite part of the Tour was ‘all the new people I meet and seeing all of the great golfers my age prosper on the tour.’

Claire Chun of Coquitlam, BC, 16, claimed the MJT Girls 15–19 title with scores of 99–95 (194). “I am very thankful to win this tournament. I am also proud to win because it’s my first season,” she shared. Looking ahead, Chun noted: “For the off-season, I will practice harder.”

Langley native Jay You, age 15, captured the MJT Juvenile Boys and Low Overall titles with superb scores of 71–67 (138), 1-under in round 1 and 5-under in round 2, fueled by 11 birdies. “I feel really great because it’s my last tournament of the year and I got my first MJT win of the year,” said You. “MJT’s prizes are great. Also, the hole-in-one event makes it very fun and thrilling, which makes the event really exciting.”

Avery McAbee, just 12 years-old, from Mission, BC, delivered two consistent 74s to secure the MJT Girls U15 and Low Overall titles. “It feels really good to win because I have worked very hard lately,” she said. “My favourite part of MJT tournaments is the staff because they are really nice. I also love playing and competing with my friends.”

At 14 years old, MJT veteran Haarjun Lotay of Burnaby, BC, fired great rounds of 70–73 (143) with nine birdies to take the MJT Bantam Boys title in style. “It feels really good because I have not won in 9 months, so to see the hard work pay off feels great,” he said. “My favourite thing about playing in MJT is playing against really good players, it challenges my game.”

Thirteen-year-old James C.R. Qiu of Surrey, BC, was on fire over the weekend and dominated the MJT Peewee Boys division with fantastic scores of 67–69 (136), going 5-under in round 1 and 3-under in round 2, powered by seven birdies and an eagle on the weekend.
